Dumb Greek life question. Who throws the date parties, mixers and semi formals?

Do both sororities and fraternies each have their own? And semi-formal is fall semester before winter break, formal is in the spring before graduation?

When I was at UVA, both sororities and fraternities threw their own events.

My DCs were both in greek life and they both had events. The frat had date nights, usually 2-3 a year. The sorority had formals. Frats hosted the pregame parties because they could have alcohol and the sororities couldn't.

Sororities don’t throw parties

The rest is likely school specific.

At my school, the sororities were not allowed to host parties in their houses, so all of the parties were at frats. Each one had maybe 8-10 per year, so on any given Saturday night, there were 10 ish Greek parties.

Both fraternities and sororites had formals at the end of each year, usually off campus; and each would have some sort of date night type of thing each semester.

At my school, sororities most certainly threw parties! This was thirty years ago, but I was recently back at my school and they still do.

I was on the social committee for my sorority one year. We planned mixers, semi-formals, and formals.

Panhellenic also threw events for all the non-service and non-historically black Greek groups. The lettered service fraternities didn’t have a central organization. Campus-wide historically black Greeks got an organizing body after I graduated, but the AA fraternities had the best parties of all prior to that thanks to way off campus houses and less binge drinking. You could wear your best shoes to the party because no one was going to hurl Pika Purple Punch all over them.

It would be helpful to list college name.

This is pretty common. Sometimes, National says no parties.

I was in a sorority and I don't ever remember the sorority throwing a formal.

At my college the sororities did not hold parties but fraternities did. I don't think you could call them date parties, though. They were much more Animal House than anything else. Frankly, it is amazing we all survived into adulthood. Some of the sororities, mine included, did have afternoon dry mixers (ha!) that were chaperoned by the house mother. Both sororities and fraternities held semi-formals and formals. I still have some of my dresses if you can believe it.

At my college, sororities hosted a variety of formals and date parties at venues. However, they weren't allowed to host mixers or open parties with been the way fraternities did.

Same. When we had mixers - it was always at the frat house.

DCs frat did the house parties and pregame parties, but also did a fall, winter and spring date party. These were usually more formal events, generally not at the house, with dates.
