MoCo Leftwing twittersphere is gloating today talking about Marc Elrich’s “mandate.”
Before Marc Elrich, the Metro DC Democratic Socialists, the MoCo Millenial, Jamie Raskin, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and the Mayor of Takoma Park all toast each other with Moscow Mules, I hope they realize: Most people just voted straight ticket Democrat. They don’t like Trump, and other than some who think Hogan is ok, they blindly voted for everyone and anything with a D next to its name. Elrich barely won the primary. He should not have won. Every other candidate was much more moderate and he would have been crushed in a rank choice or especially a runoff system. If the roles were reversed, if Nancy Floreen or ANY other Democrat ran as a Democrat and Elrich ran as a Socilalist (which he should have) he would not have gotten 20% of the vote and would be laughed out of office rightfully so. Most people probably voted for the Democrat without even looking at the name or even knowing who elrich is. Nancy Floreen did so terribly because she is also an unlikeable candidate. She ran a very negative campaign which people did not like. Marc Elrich’s campaign fearmongered and bullied people into supporting him by falsely threatening that Floreen would split the vote enough for Ficker to win. Many more people might have preferred Floreen but did not vote for her because they were bullied out of it. Montgomery County voted 75% for Hillary over Bernie in 2016. We are not a county of Sanders Socialists. We are fiscally conservative and socially moderate. We are not a county that loves Marc Elrich. Also, there is a misconception that young people prefer Elrich progressivism. This can not possibly be further from the truth. Or at least it shouldn’t be. Marc Elrich is anti-development, anti-growth, anti-business, anti-jobs and anti-fun. See: Fillmore decision. Young adults like jobs, business, and nightlife. Why should they vote for a 68-year-old obese communist killjoy who is against private liquor and any new buildings and jobs? Have the very loud Socialists drowned everyone out? In 2022, there will be a primary challenger ONE primary challenger who is a pro-business moderate who will beat Elrich and win. Unfortunately now we must suffer through four years of socialism with who will most certainly be the most unpopular Executive in County history. |

OP:
Please close your eyes, take a deep breath, get over it and move on with your life. |
| Chill out OP. Elrich was the best of the 3 options. I voted for Blair. He lost. So then I looked at looney tunes Ficker or loophole chaser Nancy Floreen who couldn't be bothered to run in the primary and who was supported by real estate developers and has zero interest in education issues. I am a parent. I vote for the candidate who will be best on education issues. So I voted for Elrich, the former teacher. That doesn't make me a socialist, nor does it make me a mindless Democratic automaton, or whatever misinformed narrative you're trying to push, |
| Dude. Bitter much? |
This. I would have preferred Blair. Reluctantly voted for Elrich because Floreen’s development priorities made me nervous. Also voted for Hogan |
| It’s not true. If Montgomery County were moderate in any shape or form, it would have voted for Phil Andrews back in 2014. |
| Elrich won because he was a better candidate. |
| Floreen dissed bus riders. Her big appeal could have been to the urbanist vote, and she threw it away. |
| I wouldn't worry too much about this. |
| There is absolutely ZERO that is "centrist" about Elrich. |
| By centrist you mean nanny state control freak lefty |
|
Anyone who won in a crowded primary would have won by very little, as Marc Elrich did. I voted for Bill Frick. If he had won, it would have been by very little. Ditto Blair. There were a lot of candidates.
Marc Elrich is a strong, experienced candidate who wants sensible growth and has experience, real experience, in public schools. I moved to Montgomery County for the schools, and was happy to vote for him. I didn't understand why Floreen was in the race at all. A few remarks taken out of context do not a socialist make. Relax, OP. We'll be OK under Elrich. |

Marc Elrich and the Fillmore, from his Web site:
I supported the effort to bring the Birchmere to Silver Spring; unfortunately in 2007, after years of negotiations, the County ended that effort. Almost immediately after, the deal with the Fillmore was announced. I did not oppose the concept of the Fillmore – I opposed the no-bid process that included an $8 million public subsidy (that ultimately became an $11 million subsidy - $7 million from the county and $4 million from the state) and that ignored a competitor (and Montgomery County resident) who said he’d build it on his dime. That would have been a win for taxpayers. It is said that I voted against the Fillmore; actually I (along with Councilmember Roger Berliner) voted against a land use change that was also opposed by the head of the planning department, who called the deal a “blank check for developers.” |

Elrich wants to ‘unify the county’ and yet he’s having ‘talk sessions’ with none in Bethesda or Poolesville.
Silver Spring and Takoma Park both though. More of the same I guess.
