MoCo Leftwing twittersphere is gloating today talking about Marc Elrich’s “mandate.” Before Marc Elrich, the Metro DC Democratic Socialists, the MoCo Millenial, Jamie Raskin, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, and the Mayor of Takoma Park all toast each other with Moscow Mules, I hope they realize: Most people just voted straight ticket Democrat. They don’t like Trump, and other than some who think Hogan is ok, they blindly voted for everyone and anything with a D next to its name. Elrich barely won the primary. He should not have won. Every other candidate was much more moderate and he would have been crushed in a rank choice or especially a runoff system. If the roles were reversed, if Nancy Floreen or ANY other Democrat ran as a Democrat and Elrich ran as a Socilalist (which he should have) he would not have gotten 20% of the vote and would be laughed out of office rightfully so. Most people probably voted for the Democrat without even looking at the name or even knowing who elrich is. Nancy Floreen did so terribly because she is also an unlikeable candidate. She ran a very negative campaign which people did not like. Marc Elrich’s campaign fearmongered and bullied people into supporting him by falsely threatening that Floreen would split the vote enough for Ficker to win. Many more people might have preferred Floreen but did not vote for her because they were bullied out of it. Montgomery County voted 75% for Hillary over Bernie in 2016. We are not a county of Sanders Socialists. We are fiscally conservative and socially moderate. We are not a county that loves Marc Elrich. Also, there is a misconception that young people prefer Elrich progressivism. This can not possibly be further from the truth. Or at least it shouldn’t be. Marc Elrich is anti-development, anti-growth, anti-business, anti-jobs and anti-fun. See: Fillmore decision. Young adults like jobs, business, and nightlife. Why should they vote for a 68-year-old obese communist killjoy who is against private liquor and any new buildings and jobs? Have the very loud Socialists drowned everyone out? In 2022, there will be a primary challenger ONE primary challenger who is a pro-business moderate who will beat Elrich and win. Unfortunately now we must suffer through four years of socialism with who will most certainly be the most unpopular Executive in County history.
