HS Magnet essay

Anonymous
This year HS magnet essay is limited to 200 words (at least according to description.)
Are they going to enforce it?
My child is now forced to pay attention to word count vs. meaning.
Original quite good essay was over 400 words.
200 words version looks ridiculous.
Did anybody call central office or school to find out about this strange 200 words requirement?

What’s so strange about the word count requirement? It is very common in apps. Have your DC revise to under 200 words.

225 words is probably fine...double is way too long. When she gets to the common ap-it literally cuts off what you can submit. Show she can follow directions

Have your every wrote essay under 200 words? That is two small paragraphs.
Try to write 12 sentences. You will get 200 words in no time (if you count the, a, and etc.)
Now write 3-4 paragraph essay in 12 short sentences. You get very crappy essay.

What’s the topic?

It’s your child’s essay. Not yours.

She should call and ask. (Not you.) They welcome questions, especially if it's related to clarifying new rules.

OP,

My kid is also working on her applications and says there is a statement that students have to sign acknowledging that no one other than the applicant has handled the application. You should not have read or given feedback on the application at all.

I do not take that to mean no one gave the essay a second glance for a typo..

That is funny. Or they would put them to prison?
Are college applications also have such statements?
Should they also put it after every HW, to make sure that nobody worked with tutor?
Is this because there is no more essay during actual test?

What’s so funny about the “honor code”? It is a very common practice. Probably more important than any academic achievement.

I'm proud of my kid for honoring it.

What's done is done, PP. The student has to handle the rest, and it's either sticking to terms, or verifying first with the coordinator.

The applicants have always been asked to sign a statement that no one helped them with their application. When my kid did it I did look at it before it was submitted to make sure there weren’t any glaring errors. I also seem to remember ds asking which awards to list. They don’t want a parent coaching a child but if a child is having trouble as op’s child appears to be having I think it is fine to clarify or give guidance. No editing or writing though

Yes, it's much harder to write a good 200-word essay than a good 1,000-word essay. Is your child up to the task?
