Lotus Birth

Thoughts? Why would anyone ever do this?

I just googled it.
BARF.

But, I also couldn't stop looking at the pictures.

I've actually read it is healthier for the baby not to clamp the cord immediately, as is standard practice. While the cord is still pulsating, it is still delivering oxygen-rich blood to baby, which most babies can probably do without but some may need.

But I'm not sure any benefit comes from leaving the placenta attached beyond that point.

Some women apparently carry the baby's placenta in a bag until it naturally falls off. That is waaaaay different from allowing the cord to stop pulsating before clamping.

Even animals cut the cord. I can't imagine the smell.

Yeah, I'm not keeping it around, but am definitely waiting a while before cutting it (until it stops pulsing!!)

growing up on a farm.

Well, animals don't "cut" it as much as bite it off, but yeah, they don't carry the placenta around with them for weeks or months.

I'd bite through the damn cord myself.

Is someone reading mothering.com and then coming back here to post "OMG you guys, I just read about this THING some people do, WTF, BARF, EWWWWWW!!!!"

Because this is the second or third thread like this recently (another one was about eating the placenta).

Seriously, folks. To each her own. This sounds like a middle school slumber party. If it grosses you out, move along.

It isn't weeks or months. It is a matter of days before it dries and breaks naturally. I don't think I would do it, but I'm not going to freak about someone else doing it.
