Kinda mad at school about their "Not-haloween" day - Vent

Kids at our school are allowed to dress up as "a character from a book" this friday. Luckily for us, I thought, my child is being a cat for Halloween and we have a book about cats so, two fer one, right? Wrong - my first grader tells me tonight that they are not allowed to use anything store bought. She can still be a cat but has to wear a black shirt and black pants (which of course actually are store bought since I don't sew from scratch or anything) or other things to cobble together a costume.

So, I am a single working mom with 1.5 jobs a toddler and a 1st grader and now I have to go buy stuff and "make" a costume. This kind of thing is why I purchased all the elements for her "store bought" costume a month ago.

Years ago a mom friend of mine warned me that homework projects were really for the moms not the kids.... I am beginning to believe it.....

send your child with the original costume.

I would be shocked if the teachers will not allow her to participate b/c she has store purchased items

ask forgiveness afterwards - opps

Agree with PP. If there was a no store bought rule at my kids' schools, I would send in nothing for anything, including cookies for the party.

I'd also send my kids in what I already had. It's ridiculous for them to assume you're going to buy an extra costume just for their activity.

I hear ya! My son is so excited to be Darth Vader and I just found out "no masks" are allowed at his preschool. Why? I don't know. His Darth Vader costume hardly resembles Darth Vader with out the mask. I guess I'm supposed to get him another costume for school.

Is this an elementary school or a pre-school?

Sorry, just read that it's your 1st grader. I would send him/her in the store bought costume.

I also agree with the PP. Also, you don't know if your daughter misunderstood at school. If it's not written on paper, then I wouldn't listen to it. Actually, even if they did send that home on paper, I would still use the costume you already have.

How frustrating!!!!!!!

My kids always seem to have book character day at some point -- and they always seem to tell me about it the night before.

Last year, my DD was Annie from the Magic Treehouse series. That wasy really easy. I hope she does something equally easy if it rolls around again this year.

preschool might feel there is a safety issue - he could be choking on something and they can't see, or the mask could cause a breathing problem, or the strap on the mask.... blah blah. Probably silly but they err on the side of caution.

I think for preschools they worry about it being too scary for some kids.

I'm on the board of a charter pre-school. Trust me, nobody is going to send your child home for wearing a store-bought cat costume on Halloween. You have enough to worry about. Don't let this add to your burden.

Happy Halloween! HTH!

OP here, mine is a public elementary school. It's not so much being sent home as "getting in trouble" that worries my kid.

I hear you-- my kid doesn't want to do anything that smacks of not following the rules, and as a general matter I don't like to push him to ignore the rules.

Oh screw the school and thier stupid demands. If they are going to participate in something as silly as Halloween they shouldn't make it diffcult on the parents. Just send your kid in whatever you planned and don't think about this for another second.
