While I actually commend the school for encouraging creativity, it sounds like they've gone overboard. And what horrible communication! I would think if they expect you and your child to put something "homemade" togethor, they would give you plenty of notice (as well as ideas on how to do it cheaply and easily).
Our previous preschool was horrible at communication. They'd leave a note on the classroom door about things -giving only about 2 days notice. It would drive me nuts, especially since I schedule my errands and have no time to "run out" for crap. But to fix this: Does your daughter or you have any headbands? Can you attach some black triangles (construction paper, cut out a cereal box and color it in with pen). Do you feel OK putting eyeliner on her face for whiskers and a nose? You could also take a black sock, stuff it with anything and attach to her back for a tail (unless that will drive her nuts). Yes, yes, I had to come up with a dog costume for my son last year at the last minute. Can you tell? |

The "no masks" in preschool is because it's too scary for a lot of kids that age. My 4-yr old son was Darth Vader last year - he had an awesome costume, dressed all in black, black boots and gloves, a full-length cape and the voice-changer helmet that covered his entire head and made his voice sound like DV when he talked. Not a bit of him was showing so you could not tell who was in the costume at all & it scared the living crap out of the other little kids in our neighborhood (I understood why he was not allowed to wear it to school).
But back to the OPs question, there is NO FREAKIN WAY I would go out and buy supplies to make a "homemade" costume when you already have a costume! Just send her in the cat outfit you have. If this is a public school, it's even more offensive that they expect you to go out and spend more money on something. |
That is annoying, OP. What county is that? I hope it isn't mine. |
| I get to make a hat. No costumes only home made hats. Suffice to say none of the kids are that into the 'hat parade". |
