my DD wants to apply to a high school magnet program, but worries about one recommendation

Anonymous
My DD is supposed to ask certain teachers to submit letters of recommendation if she wants to apply to the MCPS magnet programs. She has one teacher who she really does not get along with and she is very upset that she has to ask him for a letter. Do you think the magnet high schools would allow her to submit a letter from her teacher from last year in that subject? Should I talk with the schools she is applying to and explain the situation? Or will this just alert them to the fact that my daughter has a teacher who dislikes her a lot and make her seem like not a good candidate?

Perhaps you should have taught DD social graces of not burning bridges. As the saying goes, “One never knows when you’ll need to cross a bridge again later in life, so don’t burn it down.” Now your rooster has come to crow. I will never understand the entitlement of suburban kids and how they treat educators and other adults that they don’t deem “worthy & successful”.

Op, let us know what you decided and how your daughter fared after notification letters go out and your DD receives hers.

You just proved my point of not teaching kids that sometimes they just have to suck it up.

You just proved you are an a$$. Nothing more. If you don’t have suggestions for op’s question, STFU and move on.

Oh hello there OP! I gave suggestions, though you didn’t like them.

Which is it OP? Magnet program or private school? http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/758543.page

Although I must point out that the private school parents are a lot more understanding. Seems like there are some irate MCPS teachers trolling on this thread.

Ignoring the mean posters, the schools will definitely NOT make allowance for such a situation, OP. But please don't necessarily expect a bad recommendation from such a teacher! I've had to write letters for people I didn't get along with, but who were brilliant and who deserved a good recommendation.

And just FYI - the high school magnets are incredibly selective. She likely won't get in anyway, based on test and grades.

OP’s DD can apply to both, no?

And yes, 20:18, you are an a$$. “how they treat educators and other adults that they don’t deem “worthy & successful”.” Where did you even get this? Grind your axe on your own thread.

There are reasons they want to talk to their current teachers. Why not go parent your child about how it isn’t the teacher’s job to get along with children but it is absolutely the child’s responsibility to be a top shelf student who earns their respect. You sound like you empowered her to give some attitude and now are just a tiny bit bitter it will come back to haunt her. This is called pissing in the wind and it is an important lesson for your kid the learn and it reflects poorly on you that it will be learned the hardway.

It isn’t a teachers job to get along with your daughter, it is her job to get along with the teacher. She didn’t and will suffer a tad for it. As other have said judging by you and the “mad women” tone of your email, I doubt she was the magnet type anyway so it doesn’t change much.

I don’t know if OP is still here, but I will chime in to say that teachers are professionals and they are used to being asked to provide recommendations for students they may not particularly like. It is their job to faithfully describe the student’s work and behavior in their class. So you can rest assured the teacher will not say “I just don’t like Isabella,” but the teacher very well may say “Isabella is a hard-working student but struggled to stay on task in my class.”

Wow, the comparison of this thread to the one above IS telling. The many teachers on this thread chiming in is SO unbecoming. On the other hand, the people responding on the private school thread above were helpful, and no teachers had anything nasty to say. I would say there is a lot of animosity on the part of MCPS teachers toward parents and students. Very concerning indeed.
