What was your impression of the open house visit at MCP high school?

I visited HON Biology and saw a substitute teacher put:

1) Ten questions on the board
2) Three students talking loudly and disturbing the classroom.
3)Students who are detached and few of them playing with their smartphones.
What is going on?

Was it Sherwood?

Please, no guessing games.

It is a substitute. What do you expect? It's unfortunate that the teacher was out today, but I wouldn't read anything or what you saw.

9th grade honors bio at Sherwood has a long term sub, so that's why I asked.

PS - That should be the least of your concerns at Sherweed.

That sounds like my kid's honors bio at Churchill (I didn't attend, so I don't know if there was a sub today). Ds says the class is the same as a middle school class--easy/not serious. Labs so far seem like elementary or middle school (one day they played something similar to sharks and minnows in the hallway and took lab notes? there was also a grow-a-bean lab that looked just like my middle schooler's lab with the same name) And the teacher has had a lot of subs this year.

Call me old fashion but I was expecting teaching and learning to take place in high school.

There were 10 parents in the high school classes I went to today. 15 in the middle school classes. While it is a reasonable choice not to go, it is also a reasonable choice to visit your kid's high school class. I think it's great to get a flavor of what my kid's day is like.

I take it that you saw teaching and learning happening in the other six classes, since you chose to complain only about one (with a substitute.)

My child is in Blair CAP 9th grade and reported that there were no parents in any of his classes.

My junior said there were 3 in first period, 1 in the other two periods before lunch. No one in the afternoon.

My kid is at Blair magnet. 4-8 parents in each class, including non magnet classes.

Interesting work going on in most classes, especially magnet classes. Seemed like normal day according to my kid (not a "dog & pony" show). Eng was OK, just going over essay requirements, & kids doing peer review. Fun test review for US Hist, parents got to join in.

Good to see class in action.

With a substitute teacher--in high school--probably not. You're lucky they weren't watching a movie.

Is that the only class you sat in on?
