Drowning in dog fur

Anonymous
I have an eight month old lab terrier mix. He shreds constantly despite being a short hair breed. There is dog fur everywhere. I am constantly dusting and cleaning, despite such, my efforts are short lived. help!

Roomba! I've got the 870 (or 840...the 800 model from amazon). Lifesaver! Works so well, I bought two, because I was always running it up and down the stairs and having to wait for the battery to recharge.

I didn't buy their more expensive model; I don't need to connect it to wifi and turn it on when I'm in a remote location...before you run a roomba, you will always need to do 30 seconds of picking up stuff off the floor (like a dog toy), so I don't think that would be practical.

I have two great pyr. I spent more time emptying the little bin on the roomba and rescuing it, so it didn’t work for me.
Are you brushing him often?

I have a Samoyed who sheds daily, and blows his coat (sheds massively) once a year. This is what I do:

- Brush and comb the dog twice a week. When he blows coat, daily.
- Dryer for dogs, used outside on the porch, blows away dander and extra hair. Weekly.
- Roomba every day or every other day.
- Sticky roller clothes and the couch.
- Allow dog on main floor, not basement or upstairs.
- Dust every week as usual, and occasionally vacuum by hand, it's the only way to get into corners and under furniture.

Change his diet. No healthy dog should shed this much.

Oh come on. Yes, they really do.

I gave up on keeping dog fur from taking over the house. It's everywhere, and that's how it's going to be until my remaining two dogs are gone. It's just me and my DH now, with all the kids out of the nest, so we're taking it easy and not looking in the corners too often.

We have a golden retriever, so the roomba didn't work for us because of the constant hair getting stuck on the rollers. What has worked great is having a dyson stick vacuum that we can quickly run through the house and empty. We clean the couches with a dog hair sponge thing, and dust as usual. Also, we just got used to a certain level of hair. We still find black lab hair from the previous owners dog on occasion--and that's been 5 years--it really works itself into some odd spaces.

How old is your Samoyed? Mine is less than a year and we have almost no fur (and he is massive fluff) coming off of him. I shed my hair more than he does. We haven't experienced the spring blowout yet which I know will be a ton of fur. I bought all of these lint rollers and we haven't had to use them. Do they shed more as the get older? I do give him a quick comb out almost daily and only get very little fur in the comb. You are scaring me-ha!

This is the prime example of good genetics and appropriate diet. One dog sheds nonstop and another one sheds significantly less. I had a long haired husky and he shed twice a year. So, again, healthy dogs should not shed nonstop.

Ok, so what’s the magic dog food?

We saw a real decrease in shedding when we added salmon oil to the dog's diet. They sell pump bottles at the pet store and we add two pumps over his regular Blue Buffalo dog food.

Also, second the recommendation for a cordless Dyson - that thing makes picking up fur tumbleweeds so much easier.

Yeah, the Roomba works well to pick up the hair that dust mop just pushes around. We have a long haired cat, and two dogs that shed (but more of a short undercoat; still plenty of it). The Roomba gets unleashed once a day or so and it's amazing the hair it picks up.
