studio art in middle school?

Is there no studio art in middle school??

It depends on the school. SSIMS has a great art program. It also offers photography and advanced photography. I think it sends a large number of students on to the VAC program at Einstein.

What middle school? All of the middle schools I know of offer some form of studio arts class with painting, pottery, drawing, etc.

OP here- I think it is because if you take band or language there is no room left for art?

Depends on schedule. Schools w/block schedule have more elective options. Magnets fill some of those w/ required classes. At TPMS, kids have 2 electives (same for magnet & non b/c mag has Comp Sci & non has double math). Foreign Lang, music (choral or inst), art are all electives. Not enough slots for everything.

SSIMS has block schedule with no double math. So kids take 8 classes, including foreign language plus two electives. There are a few art electives, usually paired with a semester of a tech class, like robotics.

If you take band AND a language, then yes, you might not have room in your schedule for art. Block schedule schools offer 3 electives, but regular schedule schools only have 2. Some middle schools also have an art club ASA, which can allow students who can't fit art in their schedule to have time with the art teacher. If it's important enough to your child, there are a number of art studios and Montgomery College that offer art classes middle schoolers can take after school or on weekends.

Some middle schools offer Foundations of Art (which I believe is a high school credit class). I know kids at our middle school are able to build a portfolio in this class that can help with VAC admissions.

I hate double math. My kid hates double math. I wish we had moved into SSIMS for this reason. TPMS is not all that and double math has not actually helped my child with math. They struggle with it, probably always will, and doing more and more if it hasn't improved much.

Last year had to add mathensium to the schedule too, becausw despite having two hours of math a day, the kid was getting a C. Now the grades have improved but I put that with mathensium, not what was learned in the classroom.

Double classes of literally anything else would be preferable. Being able to take a foreign language AND art and orchestra would be awesome. This system sucks.
