Gov. Larry Hogan on Friday ruled out involving the Maryland State Police in any investigation of allegations that U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assualted a 15-year-old girl more than 30 years ago in Montgomery County.

The Republican governor was asked at a news conference about a letter sent to him by Democratic state Sen. Cheryl Kagan of Montgomery. She urged Hogan to take the step because the White House has not ordered the FBI to look into the allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford about Kavanaugh’s actions at a high school party.

Hogan said he had not heard about the request, but then immediately turned it down.

“The Maryland State Police will not be getting involved in this,” he said. Hogan did not elaborate on his reasons.

In her letter, Kagan said Hogan knows the importance of an independent investigation because he signed legislation calling for such an action in cases of sexual harassment allegations against General Assembly members.

“Since you know the importance of an independent investigation, you must step up where members of your party on Capitol Hill fell down, and direct the Maryland State Police to initiate an investigation into Professor Ford’s allegations,” Kagan wrote.

Kagan could have directed a similar request to either the Montgomery County police or the county state’s attorney’s office, but said she made the request to Hogan because he is “the leader of our state.”

Larry Hogan has been slowly coming out to be a Trump hack. He needs to be removed from MD in November.

Disagree. Hogan is being sensible. MoCo police can proceed, if they want. Not the state's place.

Agree. This is a political fight and Hogan wants no part of it. I can’t blame him.

Wow OP. You are really out of touch with reality. For a man whose approval rating around 70% for most of the year, you clearly are in the minority. Try intermingling with people who don't share your extremist views.

Does the Governor or The Maryland AG make the decision -or is it Montgomery County? If it's the AG or Montgomery County then it is a whole different political calculation.

It is Montgomery County, and it starts with the alleged victim filing a police report. Why hasn't she? Not enough time?

I would think that it would be very hard for her to let a MoCo investigation run while she is in CA. No?

Because she doesn't want to. What do you mean, not enough time?

Governor Hogan just said he won’t allow the charges to be filed.

It should be run through Montgomery county police not the State Police. At least Hogan is smart enough to know that even if you are not.

He did not say he won’t allow charges to be filed. You are dead wrong. He said Maryland State Police wouldn’t investigate. It is a county matter.

Stop being so obtuse. MD state has no jurisdiction. Either this is a federal issue because the suspect is a candidate for a federally appointed position and hence it would be the jurisdiction of the FBI or it is a county issue and hence would be the jurisdiction of the Montgomery County Police. Using MD State Troopers to try to investigate this accusation is a waste of tax payer funds. Those of us that are residents of MD but not Montgomery County do not need our state tax dollars going to a non-jurisdictional issue no matter how much you want to find a way to axe his nomination.

Hogan is actually doing exactly the opposite of what you are proposing. You are trying to spin his decision as partisan politics. In point of fact, Hogan has deliberately said many times that he is the governor of MD and state issues are his entire focus. He is deliberately staying out of national and federal politics including the immigration issue and also the federal judiciary issue. You actually want him to play national politics. I am so glad that he is focusing on state issue and staying out of federal issues. Chris Christie did NJ no favors by spending mroe than half of his waking hours focusing on his failed presidental bid and keeping his fingers in national politics while neglecting the state he was supposed to be managing. Same for Martin O'Malley. He spent more time keeping himself in the national news and did so on the MD state tax payer dime. He would have done better had he kept his focus like Hogan does.

+1000

Kagan tried to make this a political issue (and help out Jealous) by sending the letter to Hogan. Such a transparent political motivation.

The chief kids go to GC, the assistance chief went to SJCHS, the head of rape investigations went to Gonzaga.

Hogan needs to direct PG to take the lead.

Just like police involved shooting are lead about a neighboring county.
