Three sport High School Athletes any more?!

Anonymous
So for those with super athletic sons/daughters, is it possible to be a 3-sport HS athlete anymore, and if so, what sports? How demanding is it over the school year, in the sense is it even possible for them to play a year long club sport at the same time that they have their different Fall/Winter/Spring HS sports going on? I am guessing that the norm is that students pick one sport and specialize only in that in HS (while playing club as well in the same sport all school year), but I am wondering if there are any exceptions, and if so, how your son/daughter made it possible. Anyone playing three JV or varsity HS sports these days seems incredible to me, and truly amazing would be the student who also does one of those on a club level over the school year .... not sure how that would even be physically possible. TIA for thoughts and examples!

My daughter plays travel soccer. During the school year, she plays field hockey in the fall (is varsity this year), is on the dive team in the winter and plays on the school soccer team in the fall (she was varsity last spring). She is a really conscientious student, so the academic part is not difficult for her, though she's only a sophomore, so things may change.

Mine did 3 but it was a challenge to also do travel soccer (both for schedule conflicts and overuse injuries). He dropped travel soccer in 11th grade, but continued to play on the HS team, and that worked much better.

Lots of kids at my DCs high school did sports 2-3 seasons, but usually ended up dropping club sports or dropping one of the sports by 11th grade. At that point you know if you are or aren't going to be recruited.

My DD did travel volleyball and three sports in HS. Fall was x-country, winter was volleyball, and spring was track.

My DS plays travel soccer and made the x-country team last fall but had to pull out because of too many conflicts with his travel soccer. He was able to do swimming in the winter and then played HS soccer in the spring. This year he's going to do swimming in the winter and might do track in the spring but isn't playing HS soccer.

Drop the club sport.

Question to anyone, is it easier to do certain HS sports with demanding club sports like soccer or volleyball? For example, is track or diving or x-country somehow "easier" because the practices don't conflict as much? Whereas if you wanted to do say club soccer and HS filed hockey both together in the Fall, that then would be impossible due to conflicts and not enough time/energy for both?

I did 3 seasons - XC, winter track, and spring track and I’m sure there are lots doing that combination! But that’s probably not the real question in this post.

I’m sure it depends on how competitive the school teams are and how great of an all around athlete the kid is. I think it is probably less common than when we were kids.

I did 3 sports too, but that was back in the 80s.

I wonder if kids starting high school next year can still do all 3. [It does seem that if you have a super athlete, 3 sports now is not out of the question.]

Sounds like pp meant to say school soccer in the spring.

We had a bad experience with HS sports. Poorly paid coach with something to prove overworked the athletes on inferior equipment, causing injuries. Kids were also flunking school. We are sticking to club sports, which has far better equipment, better trained coaches and reasonable practices. Hs sports are going the way of the dinosaur.

Yes 3 season athletes can be found at local privates. There aren't as many as in the past but they are there.

That said, if a kid is aiming for playing in college and the sport requires club, generally 2 is the max that a kid will play at their private with club being the 3rd component and it's probably sport-dependent.

My did three, but only one was a team sport.

That is NOT considered 3 sports HS athlete. My definition of 3 sports athlete is: 1- you HAVE to be a starter on the team; 2- three completely different sports like Football in the Fall, basketball/hockey in the winter and baseball in spring; 3- the sport where there are cut to be made. In other words, the smaller the team, the better
