Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
| I'm looking for stores that sell good quality fresh fish in DC. I'm particularly looking for good fresh salmon, trout and tuna (not sushi grade). Also would like to get scallops with the roe on, skate wings, mussels and cod if possible. TIA. |
| Black Salt on Mac Arthur ave |
| Second Black Salt. If you haven't been there, it's a fish shop within a restaurant. I can't buy fish anywhere else now. |
| There is also the Maine Ave. fish market right on the waterfront. They have many different vendors, so I head there if I need some of the more unusual things. It is on Maine Ave. SW right on the water not far from L'Enfant plaza. |

Another vote for Black Salt. They do have sushi grade tuna and everything else is restaurant-quality. The staff will also give you tips on how to prepare.
There is (or was, not sure if it is still there) a seafood store in Arlington across the street from the Giant on Washington Blvd in the Virginia Square area. Can't vouch for it, but heard good things. |
I read an article in the WaPo at one point claiming that the seafood is not particularly high quality there. I'm not the cook in my family so I wouldn't know. It surprised me though because it seems like a place where you should be able to get the best. |
| Any recommendations for the place on CT ave? |
The one in Chevy Chase? It's frequently recommended by posters on the CC listserv, but I haven't tried it. |
I got some jumbo shrimp there and it was definitely better than Giant. But I was annoyed when I asked what was freshest and they said it was all fresh and they wouldn't point me to what was the best (or what they thought was the best). But I do have a friend that says it is the only place that she goes. |
| Broad Branch Market at Northampton and Broad Branch streets in NWDC near Lafayette. So fresh and they know a lot about it. |
| used to be Pesce in Dupont |
| that place on Connecticut has good fish. we like to go there. |
| What about Slavin's in Arlington, near Glebe/395? Anyone have thoughts/input about them? |
Slavins has a solid reputation in New York - but I have not been to the location in Virginia |
I go to Slavins because it is close to where I live. It can be hit or miss - I usually select my fish based on what looks the most fresh. If you go in with a fixed notion of what you want, you may be disappointed as it may not be the best looking stuff in the case. They have a large selection of filets, but I usually stick to the whole fish. |
