Cannons was involved in a fish trafficking case - here is a link:

Not in DC-but River Falls Seafood in Potomac has incredible fresh fish. Prices are egregious but have never gone wrong there when buying fillet or shell fish of any kind. Might be worth the trip. The staff is knowledgable and have no problem answering questions (a few of them enjoy talking about where the fish came from and giving some good tips on preparation).

They made a mistake but their fish and service is still excellent. I still support them.

I stopped going to them specifically because of this. I talked to a fish guy and he said this is a big deal because of the harm it does to the rockfish population here.

I read an article in the WaPo at one point claiming that the seafood is not particularly high quality there. I'm not the cook in my family so I wouldn't know. It surprised me though because it seems like a place where you should be able to get the best.

Well, in any large fish market, especially any that sell the whole fish laid out in front of you, you have a huge advantage. You can see the fish, look at the gills, the scales, the eyes, and smell the fish yourself. Then you pick out the one that is very fresh. If you can't spot a good fish or want fillets, then you have to just trust the store.

Maine Ave. all the way.

I'm restarting this thread because I'd like to know--especially if there are good places in Arlington/Falls church/Mclean near where I live or Bethesda/Potomac where I work.

thanks.

Slavins has a solid reputation in New York - but I have not been to the location in Virginia

I go to Slavins because it is close to where I live. It can be hit or miss - I usually select my fish based on what looks the most fresh. If you go in with a fixed notion of what you want, you may be disappointed as it may not be the best looking stuff in the case. They have a large selection of filets, but I usually stick to the whole fish.

For new poster: Slavins is no longer open.

Another vote for River Falls in Potomac. We aren't the most adventurous eaters but I have tried some fish based on their recommendations. Definitely pricey but everything is excellent.

I've been meaning to give these people a try: http://gofishdelivers.com/
They usually park near Seven Locks and Tuckerman in Potomac.

Kanpai Sushi in Glen Echo (owned by Tako Grill, next to the 7-11) seems to have good fresh fish.

Also we had success at the Spanish-owned place next to Bethesda Crab House.
