Expectant and Postpartum Moms
I'm trying to snack on healthy things, like yogurt, oranges, apples. I also eat very healthy during the day: steel cut oats and fruit for breakfast; a turkey sandwich and fruit salad for lunch. I eat snacks in the mid-morning and usually need 2 afternoon snacks... but I am STARVING one hour after I eat. This is driving me nuts! I have a busy job and can't take time to eat constantly... but on the other hand, I don't want to eat fatty or unhealthy foods. Any suggestions? BTW I am 18 wks. thanks!

| Large glasses of milk with meals does it for me...(or chocolate milk for dessert after a meal) |
| Or try homemade smoothies with fruit, yogurt and milk...they are really filling. |
| I keep a box of granola bars in my desk drawer. |
| I am currently 8 weeks and am simultaneously ravenous and queasy. I too find that I am starving an hour after I eat. I think that the things that stick best with me have a good bit of protein and a good bit of fat. Yesterday, I ate an egg salad sandwich for lunch and felt pretty good until dinner. Today for lunch, I had a lovely (huge) salad with almonds, cheese, and fruit, and feel horrible and hungry. While I don't want to turn into a lump of lard, I also hate feeling terrible all the time. I have decided that I will indulge my cravings a bit and see if that helps me feel better. |
| One slice of wheat bread, generously slathered with peanut butter and drizzled with honey, plus one tall glass of skim milk. I'm eating like a kindergartener, and I love it! |
| Baked potatoes with light sour cream. Eat the skin too - you won't be hungry for hours! |
| Foods with fiber will help you to feel full. LOTS of water also helps. Protein and fat are essential - both harder to digest so you feel full longer. |

I know it may not sound healthy, but Whole Foods recently started selling Moorenkos Ice Cream and I swear, after a few spoon fulls I don't feel like eating anything else. There's only five ingredients in the whole thing, and you can pronounce them all. Milk, pumpkin, cinnamon, etc. (That one was the best!)
http://www.moorenkosicecream.com Nuts are an okay idea, but they give me major gas. My doctor told me that eggs are a great filler, as are potatoes. He said that grains (like granola, cereal, etc) will metabolize faster, and I swear I am starving after two hours of eating a full breakfast of granola and yogurt (by about 9:00 AM). I eat five times a day, small meals, and it seems to work. I bring cucumbers to work for my second meal, then have lunch as my third, then a snack around 4:00 PM and then dinner around 7:00 PM. It works, and my weight is fine. We eat a decent amount of fruit and veggies but I also make sure to eat lots of protein and dairy. I try to stay away from the grains. |

I agree with the PP about things full of fiber. I have taken to having All-Bran cereal for breakfast with fruit on top (strawberry medley flavor is the best) or FiberOne makes a frosted mini-wheat version as well if you like something sweet.
FiberOne also makes some yummy granola bars which will keep you going for a while. And I like the idea of bread with peanut butter (high fiber bread) and a glass of milk. Peanut butter and milk make a complete protein which is great for you. Another thought, if you're at the office and there's a kitchen, Campbells Soup at Hand are great--takes a minute to zap in the microwave and warm foods are always more filling. At the Giant, I also picked up these little "juice boxes" of Horizon low fat milk in either chocolate or vanilla. They don't need refrigeration and they are yummy. Also, they had these little packets of pretzels and hummus, snack-size, in the same case with the rest of the hummus. I know what you mean about finding more healthy snacks! It's not easy.... |

Greek-style yogurt instead of regular yogurt - WAY more protein to keep you full longer.
Since the OP mentions not having time at work to stop and eat all the time - not sure if this is because you're in a workplace where you *can't* eat while working, but if it's just a tidiness issue, I kept a container full of cheerios, almonds, and raisins by my desk - clean enough to eat while working. |
| The foods you list are all low fat, and most are low protein as well. Fat and protein (along with fiber, which it sounds like you are getting plenty of) are really what will keep you satisfied. At each meal/snack, add a fat and protein source and I bet you will be fine. Suggestions: string cheese, cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter, nuts. HTH! |
| You just have to take the time to eat. At work, they got used to me eating every hour while pregnant. They will get used to you eating a lot, it's none of their business anyways, and you can still work while you eat. You need to eat when you feel hungry, and it's great that you're eating healthy food. I would keep track of what I ate so that I ate the right amounts of different types of food. |
| I'm the PP. And btw, if you continue to eat healthy, it makes it SO much easier to lose weight once the baby is born. |
OP here - thanks for all of the suggestions!! I love the milk "juice box" idea -- I have been craving chocolate milk so I will pick some of these up. Also, I love peanut butter, so I will take a jar with me to work and eat some on a piece of whole grain bread as a snack. Maybe I'll throw some peanut butter in my steel cut oats and have a glass of milk with it at breakfast. And thanks for the reminder about Greek-style yogurt - I used to eat it all the time, but it made me queasy during my first trimester. The thought of it sounds fine right now so I will go back to eating it. Great ideas!!! It's just SO hard to find enough fuel, especially since I am also a runner and that makes me even hungrier. BTW I have my own office with a fridge and microwave so I can easily store and make food. I'm just really busy throughout the day and don't have time to stop and forage for food every hour!
