| During college I went to a local theater that had free refills so one week I actually bought the popcorn and saved the bin. For the next 4 years i kept the same bin and refilled like 5 times each week during my weekly movie. Staff never realized that I never paid for popcorn. I still have the same bin folded up in a box for nostalgic purposes. |
| Didn't buy my wife an engagement ring....but I did put a big deposit down on a house so I didn't feel like a complete loser. The ring she now has has more then made up for it. I don't like wasting money but I'm not a cheapskate. Unless you're screwing someone you get what you pay for. |
| OP I love your post. I am so cheap about many things so this post really speaks to me. |
| Get extra sauces, ketchup, and even spices at places like nando's and five guys and use it for other meals (their cajun fries spice is awesome on roasted potatoes). |
Some of my cheap things I've done have been: saving literally everything from hotels (like I clear out soap, TP, tissues etc every night so it's all restocked daily), putting together lists in college (especially during finals week) of free food events- there were SO many meetings that had free food I could basically eat for free during finals week. One summer I worked at the med school on my campus for my work-study and new students started during the summer and they had bagels for students all.the.time. I basically lived on bagels that summer and I couldn't eat them for two years after. I would make breakfast bagels, pizza lunch bagels etc. It was crazy but there were so many leftover bagels like everyday and I couldn't imagine throwing them away. |
| I used to date for food. |

Took my kid to the ER in an Uber - and used UberPool instead of Uber X. We shared a ride with a young couple heading out to a restaurant on a date. The woman was rather concerned and offered to have the driver drop us off first.
Not as bad as it sounds: He needed stitches but wasn't in any pain; I knew we'd be waiting hours at the ER, so the extra few minutes didn't matter. |
+1 I stuck on napkins and plastic forks |
| I still eat leftover fries from other peoples plates. |
WOW. That is an all time low. |
|
Theres a line between stealing (refills are usually just for that visit, not returning visits, for example) and being cheapskate.
Regifting, passing off gift bags, buying a kids' meal for yourself is cheapskate. |

So many things.
-I take extra tea bags from my yoga studio so I don’t need to by tea. -I always take an extra bottle of water when I’m at an event where they are offered, so I don’t have to buy it for my house (we keep it in the guest room). -If I use a paper towel for a meal and it’s not really dirty, I put it in a little bin and reuse for cleaning messes around the house. I literally have a bin of used paper towels on the counter. -My son likes this oatmeal cereal which is kind of expensive. He eats it dry. If he leaves a few squares behind, I save them in a baggie for the next time. I also cut the bitten ends off cheese sticks and serve them to him again. Looking forward to reading more. |
"Made up for it?" Men *owe* women a useless piece of jewelry? Who are you people that buy into this crap? |
|
Definitely re-gift, but nice stuff I don’t want or need and I tag it with who gave it to me so I don’t give it back or to anyone in the same social circle.
My in-laws are the cheapest cheapskates and would only give plasticky dollar store crap to the grandkids for Christmas, so I started doing this with the cousins since they were all from that side of the family. Finally they (and indirectly me) were called out, so they stopped giving anything. They are loaded btw. |
| I'll take tampons whenever they're offered. I also stock up on perfume samples. I'm certain in my 20s I took a few rolls of toilet paper from work. |
