Soccer Rankings

Are there any serious sources for ranking clubs? Gotsoccer.com seems to give considerable weight to teams that play in tournaments or leagues that use gotsoccer.com's systems. For example, ECNL and DA clubs only get consideration if they play in a tournament yet you can argue that those clubs should have the strongest teams. youthsoccerrankings.edu seems to consider more leagues and tournaments yet I don't see the DA programs from the area.

DA and ECNL teams are generally the strongest teams. The DA and ECNL web sites post scores and rankings within DA and ECNL. Generally the top DA teams are bettter than the top ECNL teams.

Other soccer ranking sites do not accurately rank these teams because they don’t play in many non league tournaments.

For girls, that is probably true, but for boys ECNL is not one of the top options, at least in our area. The best way to evaluate the team is to watch them play. Rankings are not perfect and are largely based on the tournaments and leagues performances. Some teams are ranked higher or lower than they should be. I have seen lower ranked teams beat higher ranked by double digit scores. Once again, the best way to evaluate the team is to watch them play.

Youth soccer rankings used to have a lot more coverage of competition. Now it looks like most of the league games for gda and ecnl ate no longer I. Not sure why? It was a decent list plus or minus a dozen or so places. The gda teams always seemed ranked low to me (and I am not gda parent). Seems way off lately.

Because rankings count on some form of mutual opponent comparison to have any level of accuracy. ECNL teams will still play regular tournaments but mostly stick to their own showcase schedule. DA is even more off the grid in regards to playing outside competition.

That is the point. If ranking do not consider DA or ECNL games or showcases, they are the rankings relevant.

When you create a closed system, you should not complain that the results obtained within the confines of that closed system are not fully taken into account by the ranking outside that closed system.

Not complaining. Just discussing the various ranking sites. They could all vanish forever and life would move along just fine.

Understood. I think the primary purpose of rankings is to help tournament organizers to place teams in appropriate divisions. For parents, they should watch the teams play rather than scheduling tryouts around rankings.

Lest year, ysr was a decent partial guide I thought. Ecnl teams play that tourney and some were in top brackets and some were not. Seemed pretty accurate based on our bracket. Now all the ecnl games are no longer factored in for some reason and I think the value of that site is diminished. Both for rankings and you used to be able to see all a competitor's games in one list. That was easy and pretty comprehensive. No big deal really. You play the teams out on the field and enjoy it. But facing fairly Even competition is the best experience.

I don't think anyone's complaining, just stating the opinion that the ranking system is flawed in that way.

This is as close as you would get to soccer rankings outside of closed leagues like DA, ECNL, NCSL, CCL, etc. As stated by others, the issues is that you're comparing apples and oranges because it's not a true reflection of the the team's actually statistics and there is very little notion of the "worth" of each win. There are several systems used to track tournament progress and therefore not a good way to minimally roll those numbers up.

I'll echo the comments by my old coach, we play the team that's in front of us, rankings have ZERO influence on the games once the game starts.

please go watch every game from every team in northern virginia and report back on how you'd rank them within the state of virginia. Start with loudon and arlington teams...all 150 of them please.
