Why is Northeastern (NEU) so popular with both parents and students these days?

Boston locals say this was more like a Community College a few decades ago. I'm upset my kid has made the decision to attend the school over Virginia tech because it is just not worth the sticker price. Gaming the rankings, inflating acceptance rates with global program do leave a sour taste in the mouth but kudos to Aoun for getting the job done.

If it's better to have smaller class sizes, and they now have smaller class sizes, doesn't that make the school better? And all the other things they've done as well.

Schools change. Some for the better and some for the worse. I honestly don't understand the hatred from all you US News and World Report worshippers

Boston locals are definitely the best source of information about the school's past. It was a commuter college back in the 1970's. It had no right to get better. I mean, why couldn't it just stay a commuter school like Boston College? Because it made a decision to become a world class university with an SAT average of 1500, acceptance rate under 6%, universally great outcomes in engineering, comp Sci, business, ed admissions, law school admissions, we need to save people from going there.

Let's start with your child. Convince him he is about to joint a cult! Maybe bring him to someone that can deprogram him!! There are definitely some message posters on DCUM that could help you with your deprogramming! Your child might be a little aprehensive, but one of the prospective deprogrammers who posts on every DCUM page about NEU has many cats. She could bring one to your first session to lower the stress level before you begin!

You do know how easy it is to play with stats? I look at the kids I know … literally all got into NEU

Then clearly you are doing fuzzy math. For every 3 students they accept 97 are rejected. I love how people who get angry at NEU's acceptance rate can't dispute it, they just throw unfounded insults at the school.

Unless he is paying for it, you can say no.

Pretty nice to see a school operating as a school.

Student tour groups are also happening. They essentially will have tour groups each weekday through the summer. When people wonder why so many apply, the proximity to BC, BU, Tufts, Harvard, MIT, Babson, Wellesley, Emerson has a built in advantage over other cities. Many, many come for college tours because you can visit so many in such a short time. Obviously not every college will cross pollinate with prospective students, but Boston is the top draw in the country for college visits.

+1

DC did tours during spring break, loves the Boston area, and will be applying to NEU and a few of the schools you mentioned above. Hoping for an acceptance to at least one of them.

That’s the way to go. My kid also fell in love with the whole Boston vibe. Applied to 4 of the schools on the list. 3 admits, one WL. Committed based on several factors, buy not any current ranking of admission rate.

I think that is why you see so many applications to schools like BU and NEU. International students are a big part of the applicant pool, and the reputations of the school carry a lot of weight when they hear from their friends/family who have experienced school in Boston.

+1

The four years of college life in Boston, which are not reflected at all in the rankings, along with other experiences, are truly invaluable.

How so?

Does someone actually have the real acceptance rate for NEU this year? I can't get a straight answer

Last year, there were 96k applications. With EDI and EDII comprising 34% of the class, overall NEU had an acceptance rate of 5.6%. This was for approximately 2600 Boston enrolled freshmen. The RD yield was 50%.

This year, there were 98k applicationsl EDI and EDII applications ballooned to 6,400. Some ED applications were for NU.in as that is getting more and more difficult to gain admission as it has gained in popularity among a certain segment. Except for EA and EDII rates, NEU has not published their data. EA was 5%, EDII was 20%. EDI has not been published. But the best data extrapolation suggests that EDI and EII will comprise closer to 38% of the class. If that is the case, the overall admission rate for this year will be around 6-7%.

Wow- I’m a northeastern parent. I would never claim it’s better than the top notch schools (and nor would my northeastern student.) at the same time, my very smart and high stats kid is having a great time there, got a great coop, loves Boston and their social life.

I’m surprised and perplexed by the very strong feelings on both sides of this but in case some prospective parent is reading wanted to say i don’t get these same weird vibes among the (admittedly few) other parents I’ve met and my student is having a good experience. Good luck to all in the college search!

+1. This thread reads like one or two antagonistic posters v. Reality. Don’t let it dissuade you. The parents are quite wise and helpful, and the students seem to be a sharp, strong, independent, mature bunch. Great choice!

Congratulations, but other parents disagree with you. They all regard NEU as a top 10 school. The acceptance rate is lower than most ivies for heavens sake!

Once there’s blood in the waters, everyone will come to watch and maybe throw a couple of steaks in to watch everyone go crazy. I am neutral/positive about NEU and just come here to watch the show. Very sad to admit it, but I am bored when booster baby doesn’t come on and say something nuts.

In two years NEU will have a -2% acceptance rate and be the first college to dip into negative numbers making it the most coveted university in the world. Fact!
