GOP endorsed school board candidates

She needs to be up to the current standards.

If she’s not all for paying tens of thousands for a zoom lecture,

Wasting millions on schools in the wrong spaces to save dog parks,

Or killing time inventing new academy programs

She doesn’t belong.

Kyle McDaniel, 34
Party: Democrat endorsed
McDaniel said he wants to direct resources to schools most heavily affected by pandemic-related school closures. He said that includes tutoring support, supplemental e-learning, increased staffing and family support services.
McDaniel also wants to address teacher shortages with retention bonuses, higher pay and teacher pipeline programs. Other priorities include combating student hunger by eliminating all existing lunch debt and phasing out lunch fees; addressing gun violence; and working to deliver consistent special education services.
Ryan L. McElveen, 37
Party: Democrat endorsed
McElveen previously served on the school board from 2012 to 2019. He said he wants to focus on mental health for all students, specifically working to provide supportive environments in schools. He wants to offer every student at least one annual mental health screening check and access to professional resources.
In addition to mental health, McElveen said he would prioritize retaining high-quality educators, maintaining safe facilities, implementing universal high-quality pre-K programs and supporting an inclusive curriculum by “preventing the banning of books, and upholding the rights of LGBTQIA+ students.”
Ilryong Moon, 66
Party: Democrat endorsed
Moon previously served on the school board from 1995 to 1999 and then again from 2004 to 2019. Moon said he wants to address achievement gaps and pandemic learning loss, with a focus on those who were affected most. He suggests offering more opportunities during summer and winter breaks and weekends, as well as expanding preschool programs to help reduce achievement and opportunity gaps.
Other issues Moon hopes to tackle include teacher recruitment and retention; staff and student mental health and well-being; and engagement with families and communities.

Those all sound impossible (teacher pay, retention bonuses, etc. come from the county - would they advocate for a meals tax?) or ridiculous (weekend school).

What about actual improvements such as giving teachers more planning time/fewer meetings, more autonomy, support for discipline and managing misbehavior? Those are things that are possible and that would help.

+100
And the only one who seems to place academics as his first priority is Moon.

Hmm.

Doesn't sound at all like you are talking about Saundra Davis. I am skeptical because this post does not even remotely match reality.

OP. I certainly am talking about Saundra. She had a fine opening statement where she talked about how she’s an Independent and former Democrat and we need to get politics out of schools.

Then for every question asked she just didn’t actually go into any details with her answer.

I was actually considering voting for her before I went to the forum. Now I’m most definitely not.

I also researched her more and read her extremely disappointing answers to the Special Education PTA questionnaire where she didn’t actually answer any of the questions. My kids have 504/IEPs as did I in school so I am in tune with special ed and disability issues. She seemed very rushed and not at all concerned about our community. Please share how has the 100% Democrat FCPS School Board helped or benefited your 504 Plan/IEP kids, particularly with issues of special education and disability during the past four years. And, how consistent (or inconsistent) has that been with what the Democrat endorsed candidates filled out on the Special Education PTA questionnaire?

The questionnaire wes filled out and makes sense and is not dismissive. I don’t understand the issue.

The Saundra Davis groupies can’t wrap their heads around the fact that “I’m not the other guy” isn’t a compelling message.

Everyone knows how this election is going to go which is a 11-1 school board of democrats, and the 1 Republican is Franconia where a judge effectively handed the seat over to a guy who will be a useless lame duck on day 1.

If that comes to pass I hope the “lame duck” is a noisy thorn in their side for four years because the arrogance of the local Democrats is through the roof. It’s just like them to boast before the election about how they’ll be able to ignore anyone who isn’t another rubber stamp for their “fake progressive” agenda.

This current school board is redesigning literacy standards to align with the science of reading. Parents of students with dyslexia has been advocating for this for years.

This was mandated by the state, fyi.

Saundra Davis gave two-sentence answers to the questionnaire that did not go into specifics. It's quite frankly insulting to us in the SPED community that she couldn't come up with even an hour or so to actually develop detailed answers.

I know. I was part of the coalition meeting with legislators advocating for the Virginia Literacy Act last year.

The board was working on new literacy standards since before the Virginia Literacy Act and their new guidelines are more comprehensive than state law.

DP They added a special education Ombudman, they have a 2E specialist in addition to the dyslexia specialist.
