At times FPAC recommendations align with what you might consider better planning principles; at other times, they reflect the agenda of its members. FPAC did have the insight to advise FCPS that, if they really plan to build a new western high school, Hutchison appears to be the most viable site and should be identified as such in future Capital Improvement Programs.

If they build at Hutchison, then obviously Hutchison gets pulled out of Herndon along with some areas currently zoned to Westfield and likely Chantilly and South Lakes. That might mean part of Centreville could move to Westfield, part of Oakton could move to South Lakes, and part of Langley could move to Herndon. It is premature to say any of this will come to pass, and it is also premature to say none of this should ever happen.

The Great Falls parents can harass Elaine Tholen and make her their lapdog for a few more years, but she'll be gone from the School Board by the time any decisions are actually made.

So, you are saying the purpose of the new high school is for equity and not to relieve Chantilly and Centreville? Got it.

Who said that? I read PP to mean a new high school in western Fairfax could relieve overcrowding at those two schools AND allow Great Falls students to attend a high school closer to where they live.

To be accurate, Hutchison is farther than Langley, by driving distance, for a good part of Great Falls (mainly the areas in the GFES boundary).
.

???? GF would feed into Herndon not a school on the Hutchison site.

Herndon HS is also farther than Langley for much of the GFES boundary . . .

Curious: does anyone have this year's enrollment figures for the high schools? Could be quite different than last year.

"They should build the new high school and then redistrict as much of the county as they need to in order to reduce travel times and balance the enrollments."

Yes, the whole county is in need of a complete overhaul - it has been way too long. Unfortunately, boundary changes are never popular so the elected are loath to do any but tweaks.

The tweaks are what they can get away, not what they need to do, and over the past decade or so they have only increased existing disparities within FCPS. The School Board should be deeply ashamed of themselves for being such cowards and hypocrites.

Why not build a high school in Great Falls? Then they wouldn't have to drive far and would stop complaining about being redistricted.

Bc building a new HS shouldn’t be based on who complains the most?

Because their current high school is not overcrowded.

It's working out for West Potomac.

It is ridiculous, though, to bus kids who live so close to Loudoun across the entire county to attend Langley.

If you built a HS in GF you could have it be GF and part Reston /Herndon.

Then Herndon can take some of the overcrowding from
The other schools.

Who would you put in Langley? There's a reason they were put there to start with.

unless you plan on bussing kids zones for Langley, how does redistricting do anything about disparities? The poorly performing schools draw the surrounding neighborhoods which tend to be more working class and immigrant heavy. Unless you find a way change the SES makeup of the schools, the disparities will remain

Typical Langley/GF BS already rearing its head. We can’t possibly have nice things because it might affect their bubble of privilege in a decade.

I don’t think there is available land in Great Falls. And wouldn’t make sense to build in a low density area … you are then bussing more people longer distances to fill the school.

Also, nearly all of Great Falls is on septic. Hard to imagine the size of the septic field that would be needed for thousands of HS students.

Agree that a county wide overhaul is needed. Rip the bandaid off, so that things are balanced better for a couple decades.
