What is the deal with grandparents being called names other than grandma and grandpa?

My side of the family is less formal than dad's side. We had one grandfather and he was called Papa. The women were grandma (first name). My father is now Papa and the women follow the prior pattern.

I am a nanny and have met a lot of granparents. I love the alternate language names. I like the sound of the Japanese names. The Ukranian names sounded like "Geedo" & "Boosha".
