Greater Name Recognition: Denison, Dickinson or F&M?

“For those in the know, typically highly educated and wealthy families, they’ve likely heard of all.”

I doubt it.

I would have said all equal 10 years ago, but Denison is on the rise.

People here don’t understand that some people’s budget tops out at 50k and/or their Non-athletic kid would have been competitive for Bowdoin 6 years ago no longer is.

I think Denison is having a moment and not the other two simply bcs of location and it’s enormous endowment.

These are all schools with a nice size and solid academics.

And you would be wrong. Look at career outcomes of LACs--they are typically very strong.

Agree. By Mr. ROI’s logic, you’ll
get a better return from your University of Central Florida degree than from Williams or Swarthmore. Except not.

None of these have name recognition

Denison using its huge endowment to get best students with merit aid. Cannot blame them. Pre-professional vibe. And being a wealthy suburb Granville to growing tech city Columbus brings amenities. A 1 hour + flight from NYC, Boston, DC, its moved past F&M, which is under-endowed vs. peers.

Exactly. I went to a no name undergrad, made excellent grades, and then got a funk ride to an Ivie for grad school.

Most of our kids will have to go to graduate school so for undergrad focus on fit and what you can afford.

Too many striving parents from DC are using their kids’ college admissions to inflate their egos. Enough already.

“Full ride” not “funk ride”. Yikes, lol.

F&M is ranked above Denison, though I really don't think it makes sense to try to rank LACs; nonetheless, the same kind of kid would be happy at either; location will be the difference. My kids seriously considered all three that OP lists plus Lehigh, and one like F&M the best of them, and liked that it is closer to home.

I heard of Denison for the first time when I was 30 and met someone who went there. I had never heard of either of the others until 17 years later when my own kid started looking for schools. I can guarantee you that almost no one in Texas will have heard of any of them.

F&M and Dickinson far out shine Denison. I’m surprised anyone would include Denison in the same sentence with Dickinson and F&M. And Ohio? No, thanks!

Which is fine as it would be odd for a kid who wants to attend a small school in PA or OH to turn around and job hunt in TX.

I think all three have the same name recognition. Most of the time the only people who were interested in liberal arts colleges will have heard of these schools. I didn't apply to these schools but did apply to other liberal arts colleges. My sons, who have no interest in liberal arts colleges, are only familiar with liberal arts colleges because of sports. They know NESCAC has a lot of the top liberal arts colleges.

Sensible post. LACs have no name recognition.
