I can't stand people from Maryland

You obviously wouldn't know - my massive Suburban has power steering of course. You should test drive one sometime. I love it! And it fits all our kids! Oh I forgot, that means I'm rich too, right?

yes - There is a correlation between the number of kids you have and your income level.

So considering you have a pricey Suburban (with power steering) that can fit 5 kids, you're obviously rich.

But there is no correlation between being rich and being able to drive behemoths safely. And I'm assuming that if you live in Bethesda, you're probably trim and petite - not a good match for a Suburban.

We live in Rockville, neither of us is from the area, and I genuinely hate to trash the place we call home. However, this afternoon I was in a crosswalk, trying to cross on green, with DD in her stroller, and we almost got mowed down by a turning SUV. The woman driving it was - you guessed it - on the phone, and I don't think she even bothered to hit the brake before executing the turn.

I don't like to generalize, but I do have to say - drivers in this area suck. Big time!

You suck and you are the reason I drive a huge old SUV--people like you damn well do let me get over b/c my car sends the message that I don't give a shit about running into you.

Your huge, old, gas-guzzling SUV also lets the rest of us know right away who the asshole is, so thanks for the early heads up!

Get a grip--where do you think the battery from your Prius is going to go? Congrats on promoting toxic waste.

people with the older gas guzzling SUV's got around quite well in the bad weather we had this winter.

Not as well as people who could get where they needed to go on foot.

The correlation is actually reverse for the general population at large, e.g., more kids=lower education level attained and lower income.

Smart ppl stay in school longer, marry later, in the workforce longer before procreating.

Anonymous wrote:That's probably the crux of the whole matter. I'm a Maryland driver, born and raised in the burbs. I "hate" driving in DC and it's very different from MD. I take the Metro if at all possible, because I really don't feel comfortable driving there. And I consider myself a very safe and prudent driver. But there are just so many different types of things to look out for in DC. Stop lights on sides of streets, down low, tons of pedestrians, lanes that disappear, etc. So it's the Metro for me...

Thank you! I get annoyed by MD drivers everyday and it is because they drive like they are still in the suburbs. I try not to be prejudiced, but lately it seems that nine times out of ten when someone nearly runs me down in the crosswalk, blocks the cross walk, pulls a stupid move to get around cars and turn at the light early, parks too far from the curb, drives too fast on the narrow street, or is paralyzed and blocks the semi-narrow street for fear of there not being room -- it is a MD driver in my neighborhood. (And don't get me started on parking in the neighborhood all day to commute to the metro.)

There is a huge difference between overly educated people and smart people. Smart people have families when they are younger and there is less of a chance for genetic defect.
Overly educated women spend years working up the ladder and paying off the staggering amounts of financial aid debt. They aren't able to think about settling down and starting a family because motherhood could ruin their profitability.

Idiots have more children than they know what to do with. This doesn't mean five or ten kids. Nope. It could just be one or two kids that they can't care for or don't know how to care for. This could be the well educated or the poorly educated. If you are working three or four jobs and don't see your children then you probably shouldn't have had any. Same goes for people who work 12-18 hours a day, six days a week, and employ three or four different nannies.

Actually, DC was just a part of MD that got dedicated to become the capital city. Plus, it is likely DC will eventually become a protectorate of Maryland so you all can have the vote. So, we pretty much do own that city.

Wow! Something hit a personal note in that post...did you see "for the general population at large[b], e.g., more kids=lower education level attained and lower income"

Third world countries---women have many children. Places like Northern Europe, e.g, Sweden, etc. woman do not have as many children.

Really? I doubt that will ever happen. I'd rather die than have to be counted in with Maryland.

Pretty please, can we stop talking about number of kids and working moms and nannies and income levels in this thread? I can point you to roughly 47,000 other threads that cover that.

I just can't stand drivers from suburbs, they just don't seem to know how to maneuver in the tighter streets of Capitol Hill.

This is right on. I'm from and live right over the border in Maryland but it is ridiculous how many people just don't know how wide their cars are. Big SUV or Prius, no one has any idea.

And, at least Marylanders are trying to get where they're going, as opposed to Virginians who are forever going 2 miles over the speed limit in the left lane. This happens all over the east coast! Whenever there's a chokehold on any interstate east of the Mississippi, there's a minivan with Virginia plates in the left lane next to a truck. The minivan... (check all that apply)
a) won't pass the truck because they feel everyone should be going the speed limit and it's their god-given right to enforce the traffic laws
b) won't pass the truck because it's so big and they're scared and they have no idea how wide their car is (see above)
c) has no idea that they have been driving right next to another vehicle at the same exact speed for 15 miles, and/or doesn't see how or why that could possibly be a problem
d) doesn't realize that on hills, to maintain safe, consistent interstate speeds, one must use one's accelerator, and/or that minivan cruise control functions generally suck
d) ignores drivers flashing their highbeams

Then, they finally move over, and you rejoice because someone in the car finally paid attention to something, and they get off at the next exit because the only reason they would ever move into the right lane is because their GPS told them to get off the highway.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

You must be so proud. Have you accessorized with shotgun racks and a hound dawg?

You know I have a gun rack in my Prius....very handy.

I had a Virginia driver cut me off on 495 and then SLOW down immediately after he did so! Then he sped up to 60 mph and started breaking...and there was NO ONE in front of him!

fwiw (little amongst this hate fest I realize...)

I commute from MD to Capitol hill every day. I confess to going too fast on 50, but once I hit 295 the speed drops significantly, and even less once I hit E. Capitol. I always stop at crosswalks. I've only ever once used my horn in the city after 2 years of working there- because of truly stupid and egregious behavior from another driver. I do often piss people off to where they use theirs with me- by actually obeying the law, but I figure screw them, they can deal.

I'm always trying to be very careful of pedestrians- though the people who cross in the middle of the road where no crosswalk or signals exist do piss me off, especially when they could go 10 steps further and cross properly. They're putting their lives at risk even if drivers are going at the speed limit or less. It is rare that I don't let a car using their turn signal in front of me, even when I'm running late. I will piss the cars off behind me by slowing down even more than I should in order to create enough room to let people in where nobody else would. I'm less forgiving of the assholes who try to cut in without blinker use though, and will attempt to keep THEM out. But I figure that's fair. I also don't drive a huge car.

And lastly, while I do drive into the city... I also spend a lot of time walking those same streets with a stroller and babies. I know how dangerous cars make it, especially at those intersections lacking signals, or that have signals that tell you to walk and cars to turn at the same time (never have understood the logic of that.)

I've had fairly equal bad encounters with drivers from all 3 areas- though it's often the big cars, or the people on cell phones who think they're above the law. I never use mine while driving- even in my own state, unless at a red light or parked.

I see many others from Maryland who are much the same, and of course, many from different areas who do the behaviors portrayed in the OP.

Don't automatically act with hatred towards every car from MD- it might be someone like me who let you in, slowed down cars speeding too fast through your intersections, or otherwise did their small part in an effort to make things safer.

Having driven all over the country, I have to say that VA and MD are excessively inconsiderate and VERY BAD drivers, to say the least. For example, If people knew how to merge, it would make all the difference.

There is very little common sense in this area, and it shows in their driving.

IMHO Miami has by far the most dangerous drivers in the country.
