NP I’m a big believer in test-optional, and I was thrilled for your daughter since she’s exactly the sort of student who proves why test-optional is so important. I just think you’re a selfish asshole. And a stupid one, since if your kid does get into her dream school and breaks the contract with VT, your family will take a lot of heat—from VT, from your high school, from other families at your high school whose hardworking, honest, ethical kids will suffer because of your selfishness. You’re just terrible. |
Well you have certainly deluded yourself into thinking that... but I'd suggest a call to your high school counselor at the very least to make sure you understand what is at stake for your kid (not you, your kid) |
| ^^Wouldn’t the top choice school find out about this and withdraw its acceptance - potentially leaving the student with no acceptances? Honor code is important to schools, particularly the top ones that get scrutinized for fairness, etc. |
I think it is a troll. No one is so arrogant that they would risk their kid’s college acceptance by refusing to pull apps after an ED acceptance. |
I think the Varsity Blues scandal shows us there are plenty of arrogant parents trying to game college admissions through unethical behavior. |
yep this is a real possibility. |
+100 As a parent of a kid anxiously awaiting Tech EA decisions, this pisses me off. He also had a reach he wanted to take a shot at so he correctly applied EA to VT. |
Chicago went test-optional in 2018, so its experience could be instructive. In 2019, similar percentages of applicants and admitted students did not submit scores. https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2019-09-13/what-to-know-about-applying-to-test-optional-colleges Key quote: UChicago made the decision to go test-optional because admission is determined by more than test scores, Nondorf says. Only about 10% to 15% of applicants used the test-optional policy, and roughly the same percentage were admitted that way and chose to attend. In part because of the new policy and increased financial aid offerings, the university saw a 20% rise in low-income and first-generation students for its latest admitted class. |
If it’s a school in high demand, which I would assume is the case, they will have no problem rescinding admission and slotting in a more deserving applicant. |
When I was getting a grad degree at the University of South Carolina, the school sweatshirts people wore were either "USC" or "Carolina". Both terms mean something else to out of state folks, but "Carolina" is clear to the target demographic. Nobody in Columbia particularly gives a crap what people from out of state call the school in southern California or the one in Chapel Hill, and it doesn't occur to them to ever give it a thought. Nobody ever said "U of SC" and I've never seen that printed anywhere. |
DC knew a student who by Dec of freshman year was asked to leave college exactly for this reason. This parent is either a troll or they do not know what they are talking about. |
Google using those words and you will see. |
+1 USC is trademarked for U California |
| Any more test optional results to report? |
