Teachers are Vital Public Servants and Should Act Like It

Fake news. Teachers who are getting vaccinating aren't refusing to go back.

Manufactured issue.

The FEA says they are. They speak for a quarter of Fairfax teachers.

I teach in a Title One school with 90%+ students on free meals. Only two out of my 33 students will be returning to school. In our kindergarten classes, one child is returning in each of two classes. I think the other kindergarten class might have 5 kids coming back. So we will teach online from the classroom with those students logging in. Our school has mostly Hispanic and black students.

Are those the only children participating in DL right now? How many additional are DL but won’t do in-person?

All of my students are in DL now. In two weeks, we are returning to school and only two of my 33 students are going to come to school in person. Everyone else is staying at home.

If I were a parent in that situation, I wish I could have a chance to reconsider. Not worth it for the kids or teachers. But with DL we have no way of getting in touch with any other families who we don't happen to know from elsewhere- no class directory, ability to email other kids, etc.

The kids coming back are ones with very poor attendance online. I know one of them stays with her grandparents during the day and they don't know how to use a laptop. At least at school, she will receive instruction whereas now she gets none.

Out of the 33 kids, how many are active and engaged with DL? Are you seeing growth?

What are the main challenges to DL for them (aside from the lack of a laptop)?

Fake news. Have the teachers said they aren't coming back once vaccinated?

F off. Where did you type this from your couch while you WFH?

Teachers are working their butts off. I'm sitting hear listening to the most patient person in the world explain to 25 6 year olds how to do their math test on line. Its absurd they have to take a test on DL. Brace yourself for DCPS to say that kids are failing in math.

BTW my kid can do all the first grade math - but he guessed on the whole test because its an app.

My sister is a 4th grade teacher. She cries at 4 pm every day because she can't be there in person for her kids. Not one child in her class is returning in person. NOT ONE PARENT wants to put their kids at risk like that. BTW she's fully vaccinated tomorrow.

She's been doing this for a year - making cards for her kids and mailing them out (with her money not the school's); doing one on ones; working all day sunday on her day off to create age appropriate lessons.

F you for thinking teachers aren't working and doing their best.

I'm sorry you have such a sad life.

I emailed my kid's first grade teacher a virtual hug. It's hard and I can hear in her voice how hard it is for her.

We have one child doing DL in a car -guess what his poor mom doesn't want to put her kid in harms way either. BTW he's participating and learning - I'm hearing it right now.

F you

Amen! My brother is a high school teacher out west and is busting his ass to help his kids!

you only have to see the teachers unions in front of the school boards who continue to move the goalposts. The school board had better insist any vaccinated teacher is expected to be back in the classroom. This is not fake news. I continue to read about how they need the students to be vaccinated and other safety measures.

The respect for teachers have gone down tremendously after the pandemic. Before, we used to think it is noble profession and they care about teaching and students, blah blah blah. Some of the teacher may still care, but overall it is quite clear that they don't really care about teaching or students well being. Anytime you mention teaching in person, they revert back and tell you that they are not babysitters. The fact of the matter is that no one is expecting them to be babysitters, at least do the job for which you are getting paid which is teaching IN-PERSON.

Sadly, the teachers most likely to post on anonymous sites are exactly how you describe, PP. Most do not agree with this view but they aren’t spending all of their free time or work time writing angry rants. They are doing their best teaching and caring for their families.

None of these silent majority teachers have so little self respect as to call themselves babysitters.

And they are dying because of it. And their parts of the country don't care. And if you lived in those parts of the country, and your child or spouse dies of Covid, they won't care either. I know, I've lived there.

Yep, WaPo posted that 532 teachers did in 2019 because of COVID.

Well the article is an opinion piece. So it's pretty subjective. Just like a lot of the things that I read on this forum.

It’s fake news because it didn’t happen. 1/4 of the teachers have NOT said they are getting vaccinated but not coming back.

I seriously doubt those 532 teachers caught Covid from students teaching at an open school.
