Mom will not have an empty stocking because I just got myself a yeti coffee mug, cute socks, Lilly Pulitzer pen set, Vera Bradley notebook, a meditation journal . . .the lord helps those who help themselves. What gifts did you buy yourself this year?

For Christmas? Nothing.

After a year of coming down and I was the only one with nothing in the stocking and 3 button downs (which I never wear) under the tree, DH and I had a chat about expectations. I expect that I will not fill my own stocking after doing nice things and buying thoughtful gifts for everyone else during the holidays. He can find some candy or something to put in it. It's ridiculous that I had to spell this out to him, fwiw.

As to gifts, I didn't tell him I didn't like what he bought me. But suggested going forward we give each other lists. So now we give a list of a bunch of things in varying price range that we can choose from. I also usually do some surprises knowing what he likes/paying attention. He does less of that. It's disappointing he is not a more thoughtful gift giver and I have NEVER asked for anything expensive (bags, jewelry, etc.).

Your DH randomly gave you three button down shirts? Like work button down shirts? That's so weird. He just grabbed three different colors of the same random ass shirt?

Yep. It was so strange.

We normally do stockings at our multiple family gathering. This year I’m putting everything under the tree.

OMG I think I just need to do this. DH and I aren't giving larger gifts for eachother this year but were going to do stocking stuffers and have the kids give their own gift to mom and dad (they are 2 and 4 so still need help in that department). I know he hasn't done anything yet.

I'm pretty direct about it and make it clear that it can be socks or candy. Every year he forgets and says oops when the kids hand him what I picked out with them. We have enough "stuff" and I buy what I need. But something little to open would be nice.

Same. It's annoying and I think it's a bad example to set for the kids. Who knows, maybe FIL did the same when DH was growing up although I kind of doubt it. I need to grab a couple more stocking stuffers and may just pick something out for myself and give it to him to wrap. Wait scratch that, I'll have to do the wrapping too!

Aren't stockings just for the kids?

My mom was (still I’d thrifty) - her stocking was things she already had that she’d wrap in tissue. Kids so occupied with their loot never noticed

Awww. Love Christmas stories.

I love stockings more than everything else and always get things for everyone including myself. There are always nice socks...kids and DH run so Bombas, features, etc. This year I went all out on retro-ish candy. Zots and space rocks! Santa will be giving me some luxardo cherries and DH will get some interesting hot sauces. I am sure I will end up being surprised and perplexed at the number of small stocking stuffers I have accumulated since late summer as per usual.

So I'm the card poster who is quoted - no joke dh just showed me that SNL sketch saying "you'll like this, it's hilarious". At the end she says it would be nice if mom got more than one gift. I said "it would be nice if mom got any gift". Let this video be a lesson for you for next year (we do chanukkah, so I know that I got nothing this year). He literally had no response.

Good for you, OP! I have filled my own stocking for years and even wrap each item in xmas paper. I get myself delicious German cookies and confections. Reminds me of my father.

Geez, he’s pretty clueless. Sorry, pp.

I might put some soaps in my stocking that I already bought months ago but haven't used.

I also got a sweater for myself, unintentionally. I bought it for my 9 yo online but it's adult sized! It's not what I would have chosen for myself, but decent enough to keep.

For the PP that said bras....isn’t it a little creepy to have Santa bring you lingerie? I feel like that might traumatize the kids a little.

OP, that SNL sketch was so funny, yet sad at the same time! 😅

DH fills the stockings because he's very particular about stockings and presents. NO presents can appear in the stocking until after midnight on Xmas eve. What i really want to do on Xmas eve is get enough sleep for the following long day.
