What did you do when you realized your young adult was not smart enough to obtain a driver's license

She would drive 30 mph on the beltway. She would pullover on main roads because she couldn’t handle the stress. Some people shouldn’t drive.

Exactly. Nothing wrong with that.

ADHD and ASD kids often have issues driving and passing the test.
Driving well requires strong situational awareness, short reaction times, and decisiveness. Like how a good basketball player can read the court, plays, be there for a rebound, and make an in to get to the basket.

Fortunately driving doesnt need you to be Michael Jordan character, but lack of the above can make you a dangerous driver, whether you admit it or not.

our aspie FIL drives UNDER the speed limit in the slow lane all the time (also dangerous) and rarely leaves the houes.

Thankfully, you do NOT have to parallel park on the Maryland driver's test anymore!

Equally thankful is anyone converting a real or fraudulent international "driver's license" doesn't even need a USA road rules written test or a behind the wheel test. It's just, here you go!

Watch out there.

Is she being treated for anxiety? That would likely solve a lot of the issue.

The tips in this thread did help.

+1.

Also, has she been screened for Aspergers? Many people on the spectrum are high functioning (some even brilliant) but are unable to drive.

My kid finally mustered the nerve and skill in her early 20s. Can only drive her idiot proof Prius that parallel parks for her. Highly capable in all way. Yes, we bought her the brand new Prius with all the safety bells and whistles and all the driver assistance tech you could imagine. Because she is too precious to us and I would not trust her with an old car with old technology.

What? Of course there is. That is not normal to be so stressed by driving. There are other mental health issues going on if you can’t manage to drive

It’s very likely anxiety.

Your DD should not drive. This is not an intimidating area to drive (I'm from LA). A lot of people should not be operating vehicles, your DD is one of them. Nothing wrong with that. Also, doesnt mean she has any learning disability.

I think from being up front, and sometimes being my navigator. Even my 13 year old was able to drive slowly on my in laws ranch in the spring.

I ask because my sister didn't let her kids sit up front until they were 14. By then they preferred to just keep sitting in back. Neither of her kids can drive now at 18 and 20. I think they never got exposed to driving and judging traffic. My 13 year old for years has been telling me when it is safe to merge on his side.

I have a kid like OP’s and I agree with this. She preferred to sit in the back even with me alone, or with just me and her younger brother, well into her teen years. I didn’t insist, and I should have.

Driving is scary. Anyone who isn't a little scared of it is not paying attention.
And it's not necessary in a big city.

Do you want this child behind the wheel of a car when you're crossing the street or driving next to them?
