I breastfeed both kids for over a year + flu shot + sports + luck I guess
Also my older one got fever for the first time at 2 year old after started daycare |
I’m a PP who said my kids never get sick yet their diet is pretty awful by DCUM standards (meaning it’s normal food, nothing organic, they eat Oreos and fruit snacks daily too and I have like 7 boxes of garbage cereal in my pantry right now). I’m also a high school teacher in a public school. The kids go to public school and aftercare. No way we aren’t exposed to every nasty ass virus under the sun yet none of us get them. Perhaps this is why I’m rather blasé about coronavirus, I’m not sure. We just don’t seem to catch viruses despite being immersed in virus and bacteria laden environments all day long. |
Oh and I bottle fed both of them from day 1. There’s no rhyme or reason beyond genetics. |
It has very little to do with just diet. My oldest, who is a teenager, has a lousy diet. It is extremely limited and crap by standards on here. He has never had the flu and gets a cold once every few years. My tween has a much better diet. She eats extremely healthy. She has asthma and catches everything. As a matter of fact she even had pneumonia in the fall. Both my kids were also bottle-fed pretty much from day one. I have had the flu twice in the last 16 years. DH never get sick. We all get flu shots. It’s genetics with diet playing a very small role. |
Ooooh, scientific evidence. |
None of us has ever had the flu. However, at least one of my children gets a stomach virus every year and I ALWAYS get some super mutated terrible version of it. My husband has never vomited in the 15 yrs Ive known him. |
There's totally a genetic component. I hardly ever get sick and have minimal seasonal allergies and have never had a serious complication from a virus. One of my brothers is the same as me. My other brother gets everything, gets it worse than average, and takes much much longer to feel well again. He once had strep that took 3 different rounds of different antibiotics to clear. He also has bad allergies and asthma.
My daughter, 3, has had a fair share of colds and other childhood viruses courtesy of daycare (like HFM and roseola), but has hardly ever had a high temperature. A friend of mine's kid gets a high temperature with every runny nose practically and suffered from febrile seizures at one point as a result. It's total luck and not a superior diet or something you can absolutely control, as much as that would be nice to think. |
Oh, also, I've never had seasonal flu. I did get swine flu back in 2009, but it was relatively mild compared to what it can do. |
Washing hands with hot water and soap not hand sanitizer. I wash my hands all day long. In fact, I wash my hands before and after going to bathroom. In my entire over 50 years, I have had the flu about 4 times but do get flu shot every year and no more than a dozen colds. I also use disposable tissues and paper towels for hand drying in kitchen and bathroom. |
I have never in my life gotten norovirus/stomach bug/food poisoning. I really believe I am impervious to most germs and bacteria and viruses. |
That's not how science works. |
16 yo never had the flu until last week. It hit him like a ton of bricks! Week before he went on a college tour, 20k plus kids, ate in dining hall with a table full of students he didn't know who convinced him to go to the basketball game.
He's a shoes off, hand washing kid. College is going to be a whole other level! |
I’m aware but it was in direct reply to the person before mentioning they did breastfeed. You don’t have be a smartass for no reason you know? |
My 8 and 10 year old are horrible at washing their hands. Horrible. They eat really well however - younger days till age 6 vitamins, yogurt, sleep schedule was very consistent. Neither has missed a day of school due to sicknesses. I think they might get sick once a year if that. My feeling is that they have built a strong immune system and some may be genetics probably? I would not suggest hand washing is all that. At some point your body has build up immunity - it's why you're less likely to be allergic growing up in a farm. Diet wise I do t think they eat all that nutritiously but they do eat a balanced diet so my daughter never will just eat plain noodles for example. A very picky eater but it'll be beans or chicken or something that's protein there. They also eat fruit daily - not every kind but apple slices every damn day! |
PP here - my son was not breastfed due to post delivery issues, DD maybe 3 mo breastfed. They started getting flu shots only 2 years ago out of caution on my part. So yeah, I think diet is important - not crazy healthy fish and vitamins but consistent well rounded protein, fruit not a lot of veggies though. DS is average weight/height while DD is above average height. I've often wondered and marveled at how healthy my kids are and feel very blessed. But I don't really think it's anything I did. I can't explain how these 2 who don't wash their hands at all never seem to get sick. Neither got sick a lot younger, DS had RSV and DD had hand foot disease but otherwise just a cold every now and then.
Who knows, maybe it's because they played in dirt so much hahaha! |
