Your little conservative snowflake will be okay.

The pseudo-liberal has spoken!

My daughter attends Swarthmore and has friends at a couple of NESCACs. Athlete/non-athlete divide at Swarthmore not as prominent as at, say, Colby or Williams. Sports (except for basketball) aren’t as strong as the NESCACs either, and there’s no football, which might explain some of that. Williams is the best D3 sports program in the country and the jock/nerd fault line is pretty clear. (Don’t get me wrong - love me some Williams. But it was my observation when we visited and she has since spent time there and also sees it.)

Sports are definitely a time commitment and she’s in engineering so it’s a challenge. Swarthmore academics are very demanding, even more if in the honors program or loading up on seminars.

I've heard it's very good for strong students who were good athletes in high school, but not top recruits, and who wanted to keep playing their sport in college while advancing their education. Langley and McLean have both sent student-athletes to Swarthmore in recent years (a basketball player from Langley and soccer and baseball players from McLean).

I have a sophomore on the women’s lacrosse team and she has managed to find a way to balance a ton of schoolwork with her sport and still have some time left over to socialize. Very impressed with the support she’s received from the coaches who understand it’s school first, sport second. My daughter has had a wonderful experience so far. Of course this season was a mess but at least they were able to take their team trip to Florida.

So glad to hear! My daughter is about to go through the pre read process for lacrosse and loves the coach. She visited for prospect day her sophomore year but was sad that the one this year didn't happen. Her impression was that the team supported one another both on and off the field.

I have a son going through the recruitment process. He was told the pre-read process would take place in June. Is your daughter going through the pre-read process now?

No I think you're right that it's June. She has one that's happening in May but Swarthmore and one other are June. We are hoping all goes well and she gets good news from Swarthmore though!

If your DC is going through a pre-read process as a recruited athlete with Swarthmore, and Admissions says things look good, does that mean that your DC will have an 'offer" from the school (yes, I know you still need to apply and the fine print will say nothing is guaranteed), or does that just make your DC part of the eligible pool from which the coach can choose?

Swarthtmore has good need aid, but merit aid is very limited. Check the website.

It means you’re essentially in, barring something weird. Coaches will tell you how many of their positive pre-reads get in. We’ve been told as low as 80%, but most say all or nearly all.

This also assumes you apply ED, which we will.

For the PP who has a current athlete on the women's lacrosse team - how long did the pre read process take and was coach transparent about how many other girls were also doing a pre read? I know of one other besides my daughter but that's it. I wonder how many are offered a pre read vs support.

Not PP, but confused by your apparent distinction of pre-read and support? Isn’t the fact a recruit is going through the pre-read evidence that the recruit has the coach’s support?

What is FANG (or FAANG), mentioned by PPs?
