+1. This was us early 40’s but a little lower HHI. Now late 40’s/50 and just hit 150 HHI, and after reading this post, went to add up our Net Worth excluding House and we’re 50k shy of $2 million. Kind of feels good but in the back of my mind I know it’s not real until we cash out - which we won’t anytime soon. Congrats OP! We know how you feel.

I am one of the PP and with the kind of reaction some people had it makes me feel really good! Haha one even said it is impossible to have that much with our HHI.. Our financial advisor have told us for years that we in good shape- always thought he tells that to everyone!
So yay to us!
Same as you guys- I also did not count home equity. Not bad for what this area considers low HHI (-:
Also started investing when I was young right out of school. Also we live in a home we can afford, no debts except for the house. And I want to add I don’t think we are alone with this amount of money saved up among our friends. We don’t talk finances but I can tell. (-:

I’m not one of the PP’s going back and forth, but what about this post boasting about someone’s net worth is supposed to be encouraging and informative?

just about the same age, but at 3.5 million.

We have well over a million and a half in retirement accounts and home equity but still feel like we are not rich and stressed financially. Life is strange in the DMV.

It started out with a lot of kudos to the OP. People chimed in on how they saved and increased their net worth. I would consider that informative and especially welcomed the story of the $150K earner who has almost $2 million.

Feeling pretty good too. At 48 (single mom of 2), have about $1.6m net worth. My biggest thrill will be when my house is paid off in 8 yrs, right when my youngest is done with HS. I’ll still probably move to a lower COL area at some point as my house isn’t great to age in (too many levels). Hoping to retire early (around 60).

(DH and I were like you - we hit $1M combined just before we hit 40. Given the markets and our continued saving and investments, we are now closing in on $2M 5 years later.)

Congratulations to you and the OP! I remember crossing $1M around the same age.. Took a hit during the financial crisis. Just crossed $5M at 55. Stick to your savings and investment plan. You should be golden.

Just hit $2 million here at 37/38. Really starts moving up quickly once you get that first million...so congrats!

We both had undergrad degrees paid for by our parents - so are very privileged in that regard. Certainly wouldn't be at this level without that.

We maxed 401ks from pretty early, did Roth IRAs and HSAs. Real estate investments have not been all that great actually - I wish we had funneled more money into the market instead of making some of the purchases that we have made. Not bad investments, just not optimal.

Our goal is 5 million by 45/46...it will obviously depend on the market.

We just hit $1 million in our combined retirement accounts at age 45, and I also feel a sense of accomplishment. Our HHI is about $200K, so we had to be pretty careful with our finances. I just keep worrying that some catastrophic illness will happen and wipe it all out, but I try to put that out of my mind when it pops up.

congrats $2m people! can you give a rough breakdown of your 2 mill across: 401ks, non-401k savings, home equity, other? i'm curious how people stack up their net worth.

NP millionaire, here.

I leave it out completely and count only assets that can be invested.

In my financial spreadsheet, I have a lines for net worth with and without the house. We will be free and clear of the mortgage in four years, and I still won't count the house value as part of net worth.

I find it funny how people in DC are stressed at being stressed out on money. In other places, people are just stressed out about money; here we add another layer to it. Maybe due all the public sector workers?

At 1M though, we are
Brokerage: 350
401K: 350
House equity: 200
HSA: 25
Cash+Short CD: 75 (1 year expenses)

Taxable brokerage account: $640k
Roth IRAs: $215k
Traditional IRA (was rolled over from pension and retirement plan): $180k
401(k)s: $150k
529s: $210k or so, it’s a pain to log in to check current values
Cash: $40k (there’s some additional cash in the brokerage account if we needed more quickly)
Home equity: $300k roughly, but we owe $910k on mortgage
