Actually no, in the US, the transportation sector is the largest producer of greenhouse gases. |
A sidewalk is not a bike path. And the speed limit is the maximum speed you're legally allowed to go under ideal conditions, not the minimum acceptable speed. Your argument is basically that people on bikes should get out of your way because they're slowing you down, but that's not how the road network works. |
And a road is not a bike path either. |
You're right, a road is a road, and people on bicycles are allowed to use roads. |
And a road is not a highway either. |
| There were bikes on roads before there were cars on roads. |
So legally, it’s totally fine for a car to drive 2 mph in a 50mph zone? |
Do you know how frequently cars are going 0 mph in the road? Have you seen how bad double parking is in DC? Work on that. But sure, have fun going 2mph if that's what you need to do. Like if you have a flat tire and decide you need to go slow until you can get somewhere safe. |
In Maryland, yes, as long as the the driver stays in the right-most lane. Maryland Code TRANSPORTATION TITLE 21 - VEHICLE LAWS - RULES OF THE ROAD Subtitle 3 - Driving on Right Side of Roadway; Overtaking and Passing; Use of Roadway Section 21-301 - Driving on right side of roadway; exceptions. (b) Special rule for slow-moving traffic.- On every roadway, except while overtaking and passing another vehicle going in the same direction or when preparing for a lawful left turn, any vehicle going 10 miles an hour or more below the applicable maximum speed limit or, if any existing conditions reasonably require a speed below that of the applicable maximum, at less than the normal speed of traffic under these conditions, shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. |
You've never seen someone driving a tractor or other farm implement down the road? Get outside the beltway from time to time and clear your head. |
Ok Ok but what if the PP is Very Important |
In that case, the law is GTFOOMW, of course! |
Thank you! How do people not get it? The Very Important person needs to get to their Meeting about Reports and you need to get your bicycles and tractors out of their way. For that matter there's too much traffic in the way of them driving their car. Move it people! |
If that is as fast as there car is capable of going yes. If they are doing it deliberately to obstruct traffic, no. If I ride my bike taking the lane, in a 35MPH zone, and I am doing 18MPH (the best i can do on a flat, generally) I am legal. If I slow to 8MPH, as part of a protest, then I can get ticketed. |
And somewhat intermediate is the case of "riding to rule". In SF a few years ago a particular cop ticketed riders for not coming to a full stop at stop sign on a popular bike route. As a protest, a big group of riders took that route, and came to an absolute, foot down, full stop, one at a time. It caused a major traffic backup, and the police decided to go easier on riders who only slowed at the stop sign. |
