Exactly. They're just woke-trolling people |
| Did the Post (Fred Hiatt or the endorser guy Lee Hockstader) respond to any of these concerns? You would think they'd want to do some damage control or want to clarify their policy on how endorsements are made... |
Many of those making the most hay over the WaPo’s local endorsements of mostly white men (they endorsed Rodney Lusk) are active FCDC members who’ve worked hard to ensure the FCDC endorsement - which means access to campaign money not available to others - was very slanted towards women (and an LBGQT activist). But obviously the unrepresentative nature of the FCDC endorsements doesn’t bother you, though. |
I've never heard of the FCDC. I don't live in Fairfax. I don't really care who wins. But as a woman, it bothers me that the Washington Post, which I read daily, is asking women about their ability to do a job because they have children. As a woman, and a mother and a professional, I am concerned that in 2019, that this is considered acceptable practice by our region's major newspaper. |
I find that troubling as well. However, the notion that one now should vote for female candidates in a county election to send the Post a message is ludicrous. Cancel your subscription if you still have one. |
I don't understand what you're talking about. No one is saying that we should vote for female candidates to send a message to the Post. People will vote as they please. The point is that the Post is behaving in a manner that's unacceptable and discriminatory to women and its readers should know that. |
This isn’t about your ”point.” It’s about silly questions by the Post and equally silly efforts by people you don’t know in a county where you don’t live to try and take advantage to those questions to gin up support for demonstrably less qualified candidates. |
You don't get to decide what the "point" is, particularly when your reading comprehension is less than stellar. People who oppose sexism all over the DMV area have the right to speak up against practices by the Washington Post that have the effect of discriminating against candidates who are parents, particularly mothers. |

I'm amazed that question was asked. I really do not understand. Are there any women on the editorial board?
That said, it appears to me that those selected were the best qualified. And, wouldn't it be sexist to endorse a less qualified woman? But, there is no excuse, if it is true. And, while I have a hard time believing the board would have done that, I also have a hard time believing the two women were lying. Hypocrisy. |
Do you think just repeating yourself makes your posts more insightful? Hint: they do not. |

Do you think failing to make a point makes your posts more insightful? Hint: it does not. |
Only one person did the WaPo local endorsements for Fairfax, a 60 yr old man, Lee Hockstader. Perhaps this incident will make the WaPo think about assigning endorsement power to a single person. |
I didn't review her materials. I did see the reference to the WAPO and the children on her facebook page. That's a public page relative to her candidacy. I've watched some FCPS intense work sessions and McElveen contributed squat. Plerhoples has a link to affordable housing and Connecticut. Not much if any affordable housing in Westport. Does she plan to use public funds to construct/purchase affordable housing in Fairfax County in areas that have more expensive housing? If so will there be as many units as could exist if she didn't for example buy or build in Mclean? Who gets the affordable housing and is it work force housing? That big no Amazon push was basically from and advocates for those present who immigrated from Central America. Potential loss of lower cost private housing. Fairfax subsidized housing outside section 8 where not even a single individual in a unit has to be a citizen or legally present? Is the pilot program of 200k for legal aid on deportation a priority? How much money? I think MOCO had stipulations on felons, misdemeanors etc whatever so CASA withdrew. The Fairfax legal aid for illegal immigrants is a mystery. I assume it's broader than MOCO. FX is also the only large local jurisdiction where Dems in BlueVirginia or Maryland ran a endorsement process for school board that opened up voting to non-registered voters and non-citizens. Who knew FX is more liberal than DC, Arlington, or MOCO? |

WAMU picks up the story today. Amazing how the WaPo thinks it's their place to question the judgement of two highly accomplished women on whether they can handle a local elected position in addition to parenthood.
