These are the same parents who let their kids climb on railings at the zoo, and then blame the zoo for not protecting their kid when something happens. You can't fix stupid.

In DC (Capitol Hill no less!) I saw a parent riding in the bike lane with TWO kids, none of them wearing helmets. Kid one was standing in front of the parent holding the steering column. Kid two was on parents shoulders. I had to look away as the bus I was in passed them. Absolutely no room for error.

Yep they are a danger to pedestrians and should not be on sidewalks. Plus I’m seeing abandoned scooters on corners and grassy medians I.e Whitehyrst Freeway exit ramp towards Pennsylvania Ave

Definitely no room for error.

This is horrible.

The one scooter death in the DC region was of someone riding a scooter in the street, who was hit by a motor vehicle, in Dupont Circle. It was one of a sequence of tragedies in which pedestrians and people on bikes were hit by motor vehicles.

We have problems across the region with roads that need to be changed to make them safe for all. Scooter riders are not immune to the problem, but they certainly did not cause it.

Since people are posting anecdotes from across the country, here is some actual data from across the country

I REALLY hate that the city allowed those on the streets next to cars and busses. People riding them are clueless and do incredibly stupid stuff to get around cars. I work on GW campus and it's a huge problem here.

What I dont see is many people wearing helmets on these. Wouldn't that be advisable?

Also yesterday I saw a hamplanet on one who looked like he really should have been walking.

maybe people should be collecting these and putting them in dumpsters. I mean, what gives anyone the right to just dump something (whether it be a tin can or a board with wheels) on the street? Its called littering, right?

I saw a women (no helmet) riding down hill toward in intersection, and she fell off and rolled along the sidewalk stopping just at the edge of the road where oncoming traffic was cruising by. She was injured, but she was a foot away from being dead.

An abandoned bike or scooter on the sidewalk is trash.

I live in dupont and at least 2x/week my small children and I are almost run over by one going top speed on a narrow sidewalk. Scooters would be great if everyone rode responsibly, but these idiots are why we can't have nice things.

I'm continually moving them out of the way so visually impaired people don't run into them.

Could you stay on topic please and stop spamming this thread with car studies. This isn’t relevant. Start your own anti car thread maybe or find some studies re scooters. We get it, you don’t like cars and you love bikes but that’s not relevant to this topic. And please don’t start with how it is. Stay on point with scooters.

It is absolutely relevant. It adds context, and perspective. Someone trips over a scooter and we need to end the pilot programs. They found them annoying on the sidewalk. They ALMOST had their toe injured by one.

Meanwhile thousands of pedestrians are killed every year by cars. And some of the folks attacking the scooter pilot are the same people who fight against the so called war on cars, and oppose anything that might incidentally make driving take a little longer.

And I own a car. I drive it. I just want safer streets for all, and a more balanced transportation system. I think scooters will help us get there. It will do so because it provides an alternative for some trips. It will do so because it helps solve the last mile problem for transit.

And its relevant for other reasons. Many of the complaints are about scooters being ridden on sidewalks.

I don't want scooters ridden on sidewalks. But the reason they are is because people are afraid to ride them in the street. Because of the dangers from cars.

A company in San Diego started impounded them like towing companies do for vehicles parked improperly, and telling the companies that they must pay $$$$ to retrieve them. Sounds fair, I think.
