The one scooter death in the DC region was of someone riding a scooter in the street, who was hit by a motor vehicle, in Dupont Circle. It was one of a sequence of tragedies in which pedestrians and people on bikes were hit by motor vehicles. We have problems across the region with roads that need to be changed to make them safe for all. Scooter riders are not immune to the problem, but they certainly did not cause it. Since people are posting anecdotes from across the country, here is some actual data from across the country https://www.fastcompany.com/90294569/the-number-of-pedestrians-killed-by-cars-keeps-going-up https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/pedestrian_safety/index.html https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2019/03/traffic-deaths-data-pedestrian-fatalities-self-driving-cars/583960/
Could you stay on topic please and stop spamming this thread with car studies. This isn’t relevant. Start your own anti car thread maybe or find some studies re scooters. We get it, you don’t like cars and you love bikes but that’s not relevant to this topic. And please don’t start with how it is. Stay on point with scooters.
It is absolutely relevant. It adds context, and perspective. Someone trips over a scooter and we need to end the pilot programs. They found them annoying on the sidewalk. They ALMOST had their toe injured by one. Meanwhile thousands of pedestrians are killed every year by cars. And some of the folks attacking the scooter pilot are the same people who fight against the so called war on cars, and oppose anything that might incidentally make driving take a little longer. And I own a car. I drive it. I just want safer streets for all, and a more balanced transportation system. I think scooters will help us get there. It will do so because it provides an alternative for some trips. It will do so because it helps solve the last mile problem for transit.
