Because replacement of smaller, older retail buildings with more of the same mixed-use ”commons-at-town-center” generica squeezes out indopemdently owned small businesses in favor of chains. Longtime neighborhood-serving retail gets evicted or pushed out through much higher rents.

Well, if the NIMBY's had just let Giant build the original proposal (the 1999 one that had the open store frontage on Wisconsin Ave), all of the other mom & pop stores wold still be there, but *gasp* there would have been a parking garage instead of a surface parking lot.

So, ya, it is the NIMBYs fault.

We also wish that a simple new supermarket had been built a long time ago if that meant no Cathedral Commons, which is mediocre piece of dreck.

The food at Grilled Oyster was terrible, the restaurant never felt clean, the only draw was the patio. I think it can be largely chalked up to those factors. Barcelona is always crowded, Raku seems fine too.

They should open a chicken wings, burgers, and chicken and waffles restaurant in that space. Serving lots of beer. With many tvs for watching sports. Families with small children, and college kids from AU, would love it -- and especially the outdoor patio space during the warm months.

Reminds me of the fun bar that replaced the former Zebra Room, with glass walls that opened up in the nice weather.

And because Cathedral Commons is many respects essentially is a high-end dorm for rich AU students, the wings and brews place could be their downstairs dorm lounge.

Don’t forget the charming Giant wine bar, complete with fortified wine happy hour specials (no joke) and the glowering, armed security guard hovering nearby.
