Restaurant out of business at Cathedral Commons

All the places there seemed ridiculously overpriced. Plus parking isn't validated and the building is ugly as sin.

The Cathedral Commons businesses are required to validate parking for at least 60 minutes. That may have been a condition when the development got approved as a PUD. It’s surprising if this is not happening.

There is nothing overly inviting, most of the stuff is along ugly Wisconsin and isn't family friendly. Who are they targeting hip dink’s (It isn’t a hip place)

With its pretentious Chanel knockoff logo, Cathedral Commons is positioning itself as a luxury brand (ok, with a Giant).

Our zoning laws make it too hard to build densely in cities. Until we fix zoning and take power out of the hands of NIMBYs we’re never going to have an affordable DC.

The website states 90 minutes free parking with validation.

There’s density on top Cathedral Commons and on both sides of it. In fact Cathedral Commons is supposed to be a Greater Greater Washington blogger’s mixed-use wet dream. The problem is that developers and their co-investors want chains and tenants with deep balance sheets and corporate guantees, not so much independent businesses. They market and price their retail space accordingly. So much for your theory, but nice try.

We live a few blocks away and go to the Cathedral Commons strip all the time. In stark contrast to the other restaurants on the strip, Grilled Oyster was always empty, even on Saturday night. Because we love seafood, we wanted to like Grilled Oyster and gave it a try maybe a half dozen times, but the service was consistently terrible (nice servers, but long waits for food, no water refills, messed up orders) and the food was hit or miss. I think that if a better run restaurant moves into that spot, it will have more success.

We can hope. But it’s more likely to be a PFChangs or am Applebys.

I have only been to Grilled Oyster 3 or 4 times but each time it was empty aside from my group. Service was off.

Also, I will chime in to say that Giant is dreadful. It's too big, the people who shop there wander around aimlessly with their headphones in or on their phones and simply do not care if they bang into you. It's happened so many times that I will no longer patronize that store.

Say what you will but I miss the SuperFresh and now I will miss the Palisades Safeway. Hopefully the new Trader Joes on Wisconsin will not be a behemoth and will have better parking than Bethesda.

Ummm no Cathedral Commons is hardly a GGW blogger's mixed-use wet dream - far from it actually - but you probably already knew that.

Any smart growther with common sense would prefer that Cathedral Commons be at least as dense as the buildings around it which it is not. And they'd also object to the amount of parking and the requirements that it be given away for free - but I bet you knew that already too.

I agree - why the parking? Because everyone carries 5 bags of groceries home on the bus.

I live in CCDC and go to the Cathedral commons giant. It’s bigger and nicer than anything near me.

We also go to raku and cactus on the regular

Parking a big plus

Never set foot in the oyster place

We tried grilled oyster once - never went back. Food wasn’t that great. We do like the raku there and Barcelona seems to do really well.

Millie’s is just ok but the atmosphere inside and out is really fun. Also walkable for many spring valley families and they have an ice cream window too so it attracts lots of families w young kids.

The complex is not wearing well. Too much concrete, a handful of pathetic looking trees, and what’s with the aluminum balconettes? They look like they’re going to fall off the building. Unfortunately C-Cwill be seen as decidedly second class once the Fannie Mae/Wegmans development opens up the street. A bit of thought into better design and materials would have allowed C-C to weather the competition better.
