Notre Dame cathedral is on fire.

What a tragedy for Paris, Catholics and anyone with an appreciation for things of beauty. I'm watching the fire on CNN and I feel ill. It can be rebuilt but it is irreplaceable and will be lost forever.

I have a super social connection to the cathedral, one that means a lot to me. This is sad, a huge loss
.

But it's not a tragedy.

+1 Truly heartbreaking. Makes me feel physically sick.

Sadly, I think you’re correct. It’s so involved, you can tell there is no coming back from this. How truly sad. Ruins now.

I hope they have evacuation procedures in place. And/or I hope everyone in the cathedral grabbed what they could and saved it. Just grab and get it out. But - the windows...,

Yes, it is. To lose a beautiful structure of that age with the irreplaceable artwork, is indeed a tragedy.

The French just put out an official statement on Trump's "helpful tweet".

This tweet via the French Civil Service comes after Donald Trump suggests the French use water bombers on Notre Dame. It says “an air drop on this type of building could lead to the collapse of the entire structure. Firefighters are currently doing the maximum to save #NotreDame”

Of course it can. We haven’t lost the knowledge. It’s stone and wood and glass. It won’t be likely due to cost.

It can't be replicated, and neither can the lost art.

I've seen a few statements like this, and I just disagree. It's absolutely a tragedy. People die. We're *all* going to die. But buildings like this that have been home to faith and culture for literally centuries are our connection to humanity through generations. And that loss is tragic.

Agree. It’s a 900 year old building, that’s been visited by literally millions of people. It’s loss is absolutely a tragedy.

Buildings have a lifespan, too. They're not meant to live forever.

This loss is sad, but not "untimely." Time marches on, history is written and re-written and happening around us.

We have this attachment to permanence, but it's not realistic or even preferable.

Can we just please respect that to some this is a tragedy and to others it's not?

Okay? Why hammer this over and over . This thread is not for you. That is ok. Not everything is for everyone. Let people be sad about losing a 900 year old
Piece of human history.
