in a typical week my kids eat most kinds of berries, applies, bananas, clementines, and grapes. veggies they eat carrots, peas, green beans, broccoli, corn, potatos, avocado, and legumes (black beans hummus etc) - nothing too exotic |
This week my kids ate at least a few bites of:
leafy green vegetables: kale, arugula, baby spinach, romaine lettuce (mixed greens and salad); cilantro; parsley, watercress sulphur vegetables: purple cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower (not really but it was on their plate) broccoli; red onion; white sweet onion, green onion; garlic mushrooms: button, shitake, maitake, oyster (not really but it was on the plate) colored vegetables: red, yellow and orange peppers; sweet potatoes; carrots, other vegetables: celery (in a soup) fruit: apples, blueberries, mangos (in smoothies); orange sections; purple grapes. A usual side dish for us is two or three mixed greens with sliced mushrooms; sauteed. A clamshell of greens with a package of mushrooms for 4 people... so not a lot of greens when they are cooked. The kids eat the peppers, carrots and fruit for lunch with some dip. They have mangos in their smoothies. Along with cooked greens for dinner we usually have one other vegetable side like broccoli or asparagus, etc. |
I was thinking about this thread and I made a stew yesterday cleaning out my produce drawer.
It had: turnips, celery root, leeks, carrots, spring onion, purple cabbage and fresh sage I also put in farro, white northern beans and beef tips. One of my kids was home and loved it. The other kid doesn't like most soups so it would not have gone over well with him. Thank you for posting this thread, OP. |
Our pediatrician for my 6 and 2 year old emphasizes variety of color over variety of type. We ask my six year old to try a variety of things (a bite) but I’m okay with most nights serving veggies she likes - she’s actually more picky than her sister right now.
They eat most fruits I offer (course of a week this is usually berries; apples; bananas; clementines and sometimes includes stone fruit) and for veggies broccoli and baby kale are go tos. They also eat peppers and carrots. The little one likes edamame, peas, and cucumber too. |
+1 Asian people eat like this. My kids (5 & 2) eat everything, they love pretty much all that is on that list. The key is to rarely let them fill up on bland/sweet carbs when they are young. Let them taste a lot of things and don’t offer a lot of bread, pasta, crackers, rice (as first course — only after they try the other stuff). |
Yeah, I’m a vegetarian and my kids and I don’t come close to that on a weekly basis. Salads are good for us to get in carrot, cucumber, lettuce, onion (only one will eat). We eat broccoli fairly often and green beans less often. Only one child likes fruit. The other is extremely resistant to fruit but at 10 is starting to very slowly try a few, like grapes and apple. But really that’s it so far. We are trying to make her tru one new fruit a week after years of no fruit. Meanwhile she will eat mushrooms, tomatoes and the other kid won’t unless tomatoes are sauce, whic( I do count. |
