Thing that bothers me is when I see PARCC a bit over valued. I wish we had other metrics as well aside from things like attendance, re-enrollment. We're really putting a lot of weight on this one metric.

Such as?

I'm honestly not sure, I was hoping one of the education wonks had an idea.

At the least, I think the scores should be broken down by not only growth but things like number of at-risk and FARM students, so that the raw PARCC score is used in conjunction with these factors. It's like someone said - we're just going to end up with a list that tracks perfectly with the socioeconomic background of the students.

I have a friend whose heart is set on one particular school, and because of PARCC won't consider even any charter schools. I've had a hard time explaining why I think this is misguided.

Wonder what school your friend is looking for? I wonder if your friend, that’s only into PARCC, will apply to Bannker when the time comes (if it had the same demographics as today).

No because....Wilson...

Wilson PARCC scores are atrocious, Banneker’s are amazing. What’s your point?

You are smoking something.

Wilson general scores are higher than Banneker's, even if the latter is a selective school that kicks out a third of its male students before graduation.

Not true and then they had the audacity to blame low scores on students not taking it seriously!

Even the best schools in DC are terrible, they just do a good job of hiding it behind false rigor! They are especially bad at teaching those kids who really need it, the ones who come in good just keep on going and would do good anywhere. Drill down and look at their stats for ESL, low income, AA males, and Special Ed. Folks only look at overall PARCC scores, for some of our so called "best' schools the data for this pop is worse than some of our 40/40 schools! Everyone is fighting and bickering over crumbs instead of working out what is really going on at DCPS, for a start don't believe anything put out by downtown. All the original architects of School Reform have fled, you are left with a bunch of folks who know nothing and have no historical history of DCPS! It's all a sad state of affairs...those that left could see the writing on the wall and wanted to get out before anyone saw through the smoke & mirrors of the past few years

How can a school like ITS, CMI, CHM, or TR that goes through 8th grade be compared DCPS elementary that only goes through 5th? For instance, some of these schools are better in 3rd in growth and scores than some of the presumed 5 star DCPS in grades 3-5 but overall scores are impacted by 6-8th grades.

It can easily be compared to the DCPS education campuses which have the same grade spread.

And they can be compared to each other.

Those campuses won’t be around much longer.

In Ward 4 they will be around at least 3 more years. And EOTR there isn’t a timeline for phasing then out. And don’t forget Oyster-Adams.

However the point of the report card is not primarily to compare. It is to tell you how your kid’s school is doing.

Different units will apply to different schools - the same way that charters are ranked by Tier now, even though they have different grade configurations.

Does anyone know what day this will be released?

Everything from OSSE says 'early December.'

The scores are supposed to come out this Friday, December 7 right before EdFest.

Is it just me, or are these rankings a waste of time? People who really want to assess schools will be able to do so by looking at PARCC scores, school demographics, and changes to PARCC scores year-over-year, as well as checking out the school's actual reputation on forums like this and with friends/neighbors, and visiting the school.

And for those who don't have the time to do all of the above, the rankings may be helpful. Also they are required under federal law, so they're happening whether you think they are a waste or not.

Take your complaints to Secretary DeVos.

What other forums are like this one with a focus on schools?

The law requires a system, not an overall star ranking.

It requires a rating for each school. Once those are produced, people will naturally turn them into ratings. The report cards needn't be expressed in stars; other states are using red/yellow/green or tiers to convey ratings.

The Education Trust has a good summary of what must be captured in each state's rating system. https://edtrust.org/students-cant-wait/school-ratings-2/

^^ typo

Should be - once those are produced, people will turn them into "rankings"
