DP. You sound like the racist, PP. you think Means testing is only for minorities? |
I worked one year as a social worker and I can tell you with 100% certainly that the most critical thing any society, state for govt can do is provide free, and easy birth control to every single woman starting at age 15. I never once saw a single woman have any hope of getting out of poverty once she was pregnant (or pregnant again). I will never get why republicans haven't pushed this? god knows they hate poor people and especially poor people having kids. |
I read the story and it’s terribly sad. Her description of not buying tampons so her son could have diaper cream and the financial distress that occurred when her toddler threw one shoe out the stroller and she had to buy him a new pair were heartwrenching. I hope her luck turns soon. |
Since when is means-testing racist?
It is race blind. Most poor people in this country are white in raw numbers. |
How about a little personal responsibility? |
Given that money doesn’t grow on trees wouldn’t it be more optimal to provide more resources/free BC for poor women/families instead of spreading resources too thin and giving it to all women? |
You are clearly a high IQ person. Delayed gratification is a function of High IQ. Most people are too dumb to behave like you so the state needs to intervine more aggressively. |
The PP citing the Colorado initiative giving free or minimal cost IUDs to teens, particularly teen mothers, is an example of this. If it is accessible and affordable, most women will choose to control their fertility. Will there be outliers? Sure, of course. But what we see in different large demographic trends is that, if given the choice and it is available, the majority of women choose to both delay motherhood and have fewer children. Where the rubber meets the road here, for me, is that this should be something both political parties agree on. Fewer pregnancies, fewer abortions, fewer people having kids in poverty that rely on the state. Should be a win for all, right? It is not this way for obvious reasons. |
Um, this measures birth RATES per woman aged 15-19. Duh. |
Exactly, pp here. Birth control and certain health services need to be free or extremely low cost, especially for people under certain income levels. |
OMG is the stupid strong. Learn to read a chart. Number per thousand of teens aged 15-19. Not absolute number. SMDH. |
This is nothing new, unfortunately
When I was growing up in the 70s, I could clearly see that having a child out of wedlock or too young or with an unstable male or a poor job outlook was the road to financial ruin. I was given up for adoption and determined not to repeat the cycle. So I put off sex until I was out of college and had a job. But if I had gotten preg3I would have not continued the pregnancy. Allyson should have had an abortion or given her child up for adoption. But now she should find work in a childcare facility so she can get a paycheck and free childcare. She needs to network hard and build a community of people who can assist |
I'm sorry, this is getting really confusing. Let's back up. Providing free birth control for all is fine. Providing free birth control for poor people (means testing) is fine. Providing free birth control AND paying a cash incentive for taking it, to ALL people is fine. Providing free birth control AND paying a cash incentive just for poor people (means testing)? That's where it gets dicey. Because a greater percentage of minorities in the US are poor. Requiring birth control use of ALL people is bad. Requiring birth control use in order to get public assistance/food benefits/medical treatment/reduced prison sentences is bad. |
States that have laws requiring pregnant women to view an ultrasound before having an abortion should also be required to have pregnant women read this article or others like it, showing the lack of assistance for women in their state who have a baby and find they can't provide for it. Too many girls think that life will be easy or they will just somehow manage. Making them read some realistic articles demonstrating exactly how little help will be there for them and their baby will make it, perhaps, a bit more real how on their own they are. |
Watching MTV’s 16 and Pregnant was like that for a brief while. Then it went to hell with Teen Mom. |
