The Washington Ballet

Bumped this thread because I was surprised to see dancers from the Metropolitan Ballet out promoting their production of The Nutcracker. Are they comparable to the Washington Ballet?

No, they are not comparable. Metropolitan Ballet is a student production, possibly with a few guest soloists. WB is the production of a professional company, with a large number of students in the cast.

That said, I've been to Metropolitan's performances and have really enjoyed them.

MYB is another wonderful student production. They perform at Montgomery College in Rockville.

Apparently The Washington Ballet has yet to pay Septime Webre any of the royalties they owe him for using his production of The Nutcracker. It’s been 3 years and he hasn’t received anything. I know they are having huge financial problems and mismanagement issues, but stop paying for live music and renting out the Opera House if you can’t even pay the people to whom you owe money. I’m sure Nutcracker is the only production they make any money on, and the least they can do is pay the person who is allowing them to make that money. Shameful.

The Washington Ballet performs the Nutcracker at the Warner Theater, and they have for a very long time.

Yes, but when you use choreography from someone else, you pay that person royalties. For example, if a company wants to perform Balanchine, they have to get special permission and then pay for the rights to use it. This is standard practice.

You know him personally? That’s pretty cool. Has this been published in Wash Post?

I don’t think it’s been published anywhere.

I second this opinion. And the school for sure is losing money because they are losing students. And many families have been upset over the emphasis on needing to be super thin and having a perfect ballet body to be successful in ballet. This is a direct result of things the HOS has said to parents and students.

The school also suddenly "canceled" their much-advertised Advanced Track with no explanation. My DD specifically re-enrolled this year because of the opportunity to audition for this Advanced Track.

They don't know their head from their ass at this point. HOS and her hubs are running the school into the ground because they don't care about any students actually enrolled in the school, only those in PTP A, that mostly didn't originate from TWSB. Really screwed up priorities if you ask me.

He helped them dig their financial hole. He can get to the back of the line.

I'm not the PP you're responding to, but... A lot of factors put the Washington Ballet into their "financial hole." Payment of royalties is a very basic obligation for any performing arts organization, whatever its financial situation. I hope the non-payment is somehow part of a plan to pay royalties eventually when finances allow it.

Meh...
Most organizations own the work these days. I’m skeptical of his claims that he is owed for nutcracker.

Actually, I agree with this. Septime's work was paid for years ago. I know for a fact Nutcracker cost over $1Million and they have no plans on not using his Nutcracker for the time being because they are so far in the hole.

They are also hitting up parents at the school for donations. Pathetic. Julie, Xiomara, et al. are running this place into the ground.
