Making college visit count

Well that's strange, since both of my kids are attending flagship state universities with significant merit scholarships.

Most don’t. But, some do like Alabama, UMiami, Miami of Ohio, Arizona, with published SAT/GPA cutoffs.

Lehigh?

No, not Lehigh. We actually toured Lehigh and that was a much better tour than this last one.

UMiami is private.

No. You're linking to a subset of Stamps Scholars. There are 150 B/K Scholars every year.
http://www.bannekerkey.umd.edu/index.html

And it's not publicly announced how many are partial and how many are full awards.

Thank-you for clarifying that cuz I thought more than that went to Blair alone.

But, again, they are only partial scholarships. Even on the page you cited, only six are full scholarships. OP or a PP said she was "counting" on a full merit scholarship at a flagship and that just doesn't happen at the better flagships like UNC, UVA and Berkeley. Funds are reserved for low-income, first-generation, etc.

So they are not attending UNC, Berkeley or UVA. The publics that don't have to, that are more elite, reserve the little money they have for financial aid. https://www.newamerica.org/education-policy/edcentral/flagships/

Uh no, it’s not private.

It's the schools that are overthinking it. I, as a parent, think it's utterly ridiculous and borderline discriminatory to "track" the visits. But if the darn schools require it, I can just as well make sure we are counted.

Which schools require it?

"we" are not going to college, so therefore it's ridiculous to say that "we" are counted. You need to separate yourself from your child, lady.

+1. And a new class of entitled mothers who think their 3.2 kid with blah ECs and 29 ACTs is getting into the Ivies enters the DCUM College and University Discussion Forum. OP if you are real, PLEASE go read college confidential, pick up some good books and talk to your kid's college counselor before you make her think she can just walk into these schools. It's a meat market out there.

It also sounds like she has a ninth grader, and is basically doing some kind of mental math where she's assuming what her kids grades are going to be in subsequent years. So much can happen in three years -- mental health issues, sports injuries, getting derailed by a bad breakup, teenage rebellion, parents get divorced and kids' grades suffer.
It's kind of like all those kids that go to college to do pre-med and end up majoring in psychology. Just saying.

Oh please! The big schools, ivies and SLACs don't track at all. You can go to any school and take a tour without giving your name. If you want to give a name and are afraid of discrimination, give a fake name. End of problem. Of all the schools we toured only my LAC had a sign-up list and I really doubt they ever looked at it again other than to make sure no more than 30 were in a tour group at a time.

Did you even read what you linked? The very first line of the article says, "Many flagship institutions are very generous providers of merit aid." Further, if you read the report behind the article, you'll see specific mention of UVA realizing that they may need to re-evaluating their approach in order to draw the best candidates.

That's odd, because I've toured somewhere between 30 and 40 universities over the years with my kids, and every single one of them had some sort of pre-registration process for campus visits. Maybe it is because we mostly did "junior days" or "senior days" or admitted student programs, but I don't recall "just showing up" for any campus visit.

Of course I read it. It says that the publics that NEED to (in order to get a good student body), like Kentucky, do offer merit. But it specifically the best flagships that don't have to buy students, don't, and then the cite UNC, UVA and Berkeley. would you prefer that I get you another article?
