"I led a few town hall style family meetings in Falls Church, Virginia this week.
A mother stood and said: Glennon, how do we talk to our children about what’s going on at the border? How do we tell our kids that babies are being stripped from their mothers’ arms?
And I said: I can tell you what I tell my kids. You know the story about what Mister Rogers’ mother told him? She said, “When scary things happen: look for the helpers. There will always be helpers.” I tell my kids that story. And then I take it further. I tell them that it’s not enough to look for the helpers. We must BECOME THE HELPERS.
I tell my kids the truth about what’s going on at the border. I tell them the truth about everything:
I tell them the truth is that evil is real and powerful, but that Love is realer, and more powerful.
I tell them that there will always be those who use people as pawns for power. And there will always be helpers that stand up, show up and say: NO. People over power. People over politics. People over patriotism. People First.
And I tell them that as for our family: WE WILL BE THE HELPERS. As for us and our house: We will not stand for terrified babies being torn from their mothers’ arms. As for us and our house: We understand that immigration is complicated and still we say: NOT THIS.
As for us and our house: We will not surrender to despair. We will not wallow in heartbreak or anger without taking action. Heartbreak without action might as well be apathy.
No. As for us and our house we will not just feel sad -- we will feel and then ACT. And this is how our personal pain becomes HELP – BECOMES LOVE IN ACTION. This is how heartbreak becomes a revolution of love and change.
In honor of the Fathers in my life: I’ve given again to @Together Rising's efforts to reunify terrified babies with their fathers. I’ve done it in the name of Craig, of Bubba, of Abby’s father, of Sister’s Johnny.
I don’t know how long this nightmare will last: But I know we’ll outlast it.
We’ll make sure Love Wins or we’ll die trying.
I’ll keep asking shamelessly for help because it’s not for me, it’s for them.
See our previous updates (below) for how carefully we are vetting every organization to whom we give and how transparently we are updating you on our every move. As always, every penny we receive will go to organizations across this nation showing up in detainment centers – comforting, advocating for, and reuniting families.
There is no such thing as other people’s children.
Show up today in honor of the fathers in your life and then sit down tonight and tell your family WHO YOU ARE. That as for you and your house: YOU ARE THE HELPERS. Here is where to show up (all gifts are tax-deductible):
