Sue their asses. Go to the media. I’m so tired of people thinking that this kind of thing is okay.

I’m told that in MoCo the special kids, even the ones who aren’t ‘high needs’, are left behind on field trips.
And yet if you look at the IvyMount school - one of the best special needs schools - they take ALL of the kids out on a trip at least once a week - even the highest needs /very severe kids. Field trips into the community are more important for the SN kids than the non SN kids . Your child is supposed to receive an appropriate education - don’t allow them to do this. If they need an extra aid so be it, but it’s their obligation to take your child on this trip as part of her schooling.

And why on earth are opinionated , lame parents going as chaperones??

My SN kid in MCPS goes on all the field trips. OP's problem is with that particular school, not MCPS in general.

It's not even school related.

OP said it was an extended day - day trip. So it is FCPS, MCPS, PWCS, or what? Or none? Just a private company that provides extended day services? And why are they going on a 2.5hr trip? How does that work? Aren't you normally in an extended day for only 2 or 3 hours? Certainly not enough time to go on a field trip to St. Marys

I think OP means that they will leave during the school day (in the morning), and that, due to the distance to the site/St. Mary’s, they will be back/return after the usual end of day/dismissal time. So it’s as though it is an extended day program - the field trip is longer than a typical school day.

Pretty sure ED stands for “emotional disturbance” in this context, not “extended day.”

Back on page one, OP said:

“Op here-

1) This is an extended day- day trip. The location is 2.5 hours from school.”

In other places, she referred to ED. Two different mentions - two different meanings.

It's emotional disability

Emotional disturbance in federal law, emotional disability in Maryland law.

Either way, there are references to both extended day (the timing of the field trip) and ED (emotional disturbance or emotional disability).

OP here-

Could not get a response prior to the trip so she did miss it and we had a fun day together. Used that day to write a formal complaint to the county and write an state complaint. We are now working with the compliance unit and are scheduling a meeting soon.

At the very least, they have already agreed to refund all money, allow her on the trip next year, meet to discuss her IEP and what provisions need to be in place with a central person in charge, and allow a switch of schools for next year if we want.

However, MCPS being MCPS, they have yet to actually say that what they did was wrong or give an apology. Still waiting on that one!

Ugh, sorry OP. I am frustrated for you that she had to miss it.

The school system DOES.NOT.CARE. The school got what they wanted-she didn't go on the trip.

I hope the teacher and administrator get discipline reports in their file. I'm sorry this happened, OP.

Thanks for the update, OP. I was invested in this as well - I'm SO very pissed on you and your DD's behalf. You have done all the right things. I wouldn't expect to get any kind of apology or admission of wrong doing. I filed a state complaint when my oldest was in 6th grade. I wasn't expecting for the complaint to be found in my favor (and it wasn't) but FCPS did provide what was asked for - I believe it was because they just wanted to cover their ass and appear as accommodating if I escalated things further. You might, if you feel up to it, ask how they are going to provide your DD with the learning opportunity the other children had. Please keep us updated on this!
