Op here. I would hope our kids would go to better schools than UVA. DH and I are both Ivy League educated. |
Good luck with that. |

OP, are your DCs hoping to go to UVA or William and Mary? I ask others on this forum -- what kind of GPA/class rank do you need to get accepted to UVA from Langley or McLean HS? If UVA is a "safety school" for the top 5-10 students in each graduating class, your DC will need to pretty much take all APs to compete and be in the running for UVA admission.

Neither McLean nor Langley send tons of kids to Ivies. McLean had 9 from Class of 2017 and Langley had 8.
There are always kids going to other SLACs like Williams, as well as to other state schools like Berkeley and Michigan that some consider preferable to UVA. However, for the most part, there are few better ways to make enemies quickly at those schools than to have a dismissive attitude towards UVA and other state schools. |
+1 Langley parent here, and also another minivan driver. The woman you're referring to is the infamous Bullis Mom. Her daughter wasn't even at Langley for a full year, yet she returns again and again to excoriate the administration, claiming they "forced" her daughter to overload on APs. Any Langley parent can tell you, this is utter B.S. I've had kids there on and off for the past ten years, and they've always been told exactly the opposite by counselors and admin; that is, only take what you can handle, and *never* overload on APs.
It's obvious Bullis Mom has other personal issues and decided to use Langley as a scapegoat for all her other complaints. Of all the haters on DCUM, she's by far the worst. |
This is simply not true. Please stop spreading misinformation. |
+1 This is hilarious.

This is actually quite true. I had a child at Langley who was clearly middle of the pack. Langley would have never supported him applying to UVA or William & Mary. He wasn't top 10% with national awards so went to JMU. Second child went private and was a top student, top grades and test scores and national awards and just squeaked into UVA. Today, I doubt he would get in. |
+1. Five brothers and sisters and I attended Langley back in the 90's, all immigrants from Vietnam. One ended up at Harvard, two at Columbia and one at UVa. I was not good enough and had to attend George Mason University. All of us are now doing very well and are residing in the Mclean zip code. Btw, I own a IT company and all of my brothers and sisters are working for me, and yes I make more $$$ then all of my siblings . For those in the middle of packs at Mclean or Langley, please remember this: past performance does not guarantee future results

Can I work for you? You sound like a great boss.

| I keep seeing the phrase UCM used on this thread. Does UCM mean something different from UMC? |
if you had gone to an ivy league school you would know ... jk

Is it even possible to take all APs as a sophomore? I thought the only AP that was available to sophmores was AP world history. |
OP, I'm not going to attack you for your sentiment. It's understandable that someone who attended an Ivy League school would want the same for their child. But what is your plan for trying to get your child accepted into an Ivy? In a world where nearly perfect grades in top level courses are no guarantee for UVA, what makes you think that it's reasonable to assume your child will be accepted by an ivy? |
