| We have 2 elementary kids and looking to move to McLean for better schools. Currently we live in Alexandria. Wondering if there is a cultural difference between McLean and Langley High. |
| One has rich, white kids, while the other has rich white kids. Both have kids from families who live in boring McLean. Does that answer your question, OP? |
No, it isn't the same at all. We decided on Mclean HS. |
|
Langley is 65% white, less than 2% low-income, and the kids mostly live in McLean and Great Falls. McLean is 55% white, about 10% low-income, and the kids live in McLean, Falls Church, and Vienna. Both schools are over 20% Asian.
The dominant culture at both schools consists of hard-working, ambitious kids taking lots of AP classes and preparing for college, but Langley is a bit more “Type A.” The precincts that are zoned for Langley mostly vote Republican, like Clifton and Fairfax Station, whereas the precincts zoned for McLean tend to vote Democratic, like nearby Arlington and Falls Church City. Langley used to have more students, but the enrollment at McLean has been larger for the last few years. Langley still beats McLean at most sports, except for gymnastics, tennis, and the occasional basketball game. |
Fairfax Station and Clifton are nowhere near McLean. They are out by Centreville |
Understood - the point was that Clifton, Fairfax Station, and the areas in McLean and Great Falls zoned for Langley have been among the most Republican areas of Fairfax County. |
Both stink at football. |
The houses within two miles from Langley HS are much bigger than those around Mclean HS. Langley HS will be done with renovation this year so it looks very modern. You will see more Lexus, Benz and Porsche at Langley HS than you will at Mclean HS just simply people live around Langley HS are much wealthier than folks around Mclean HS. Mclean HS takes kids from Falls Church, Vienna areas so those areas are not as wealthier than Mclean itself. The UCM in great falls and Mclean will send kids to Langley HS. The wealthy people in Great Falls and Mclean send their kids to Potomac and Madeira Private schools. Langley HS seems to have more issues with drugs than Mclean HS. Both schools suck in Football because lack of AA players on the team would be my guess. Mclean 0-10, Langley 2-8. |

Langley has virtually no have-nots.
McLean as some. Both have plenty of haves. Langley has more have-mores. Both are large enough that your child should be able to find a niche. Orchestra, band, chorus, theatre are great ways to find niches beyond athletics and all are strong at both schools. There are drugs at both schools, but it is easy for students to avoid them too. Both do active programs to reduce stress. Both have more than their fair share of excellent teachers. Both send most students on to great colleges. Find a house you like and has the best commute(s) for you. Or do you look better in red or green?

Np. It was poorly written, if that’s the case. |
| My kids goto McLean and I've asked them about the differences between McLean and Langley. They joke around that the Langley kids are the drug users, but the McLean kids are the dealers. Again, just a joke but the truth behind it is that the McLean kids seem to be more down to earth while the Langley kids are more about money/looks. |
| There’s no other public school in NoVa besides Langley that has virtually no lower-income kids; Walt Whitman in Bethesda is probably the closest comparison. McLean has more diversity and is a slightly wealthier, less white/more Asian version of other NoVa schools like Madison and Yorktown. |

Where do I send my kids when I want to avoid high percentage of rich kids? Where are the MC and UMC kids?
Don't care for sports or arts. More like STEM and languages. |
I understood the pp just fine and I haven't even had my coffee yet. |
Seriously, eff off. You clearly don't even live here so why pass judgment? |
