The Heights' website is very informative if you are interested in actually understanding the philosophy of the school. The male teachers we have had are of the utmost character. The reason women do not teacher there has noting to do with sexism or chauvinism. Check out the writings on the website and listen to the podcasts. The thoughts expressed here are a complete misrepresentation of a really great school for boys. Anyone not willing to researching it themselves is missing out. |
The half of humanity that is female is not eligible to teach at a school, but it has nothing to do with sexism? Well, I'm willing to listen to your argument, but it's a tough case to make. |
Having a nurse on site is not a requirement for meds administration. |
After having all female teachers from K-2, I felt that my boy needed a teacher that was more in tune with his needs. The teacher are very active with the boys. They play sports with them and provide a good male role model for them. While I know that women could do the same (play sports with them) I never saw one female teacher on the playground do that, beyond yell, be careful, your going to hurt yourself, don't throw the ball on the playground, stay away from the dirt pile, put the stick down. I loved the freedom the boys had in the lower school to run, jump and be muddy. I was pleased that my sons had male teacher role models with families. Often, the message sent to boys, is that you can't be a teacher or nurse or <fill in other female dominated careers> I don't think it is good to have all male or all female, but there were very few schools with a good mix of both. I don't feel NCS having 90% female staff is a detriment to the girls growth nor do I feel that the Heights having 100% male teachers is a detriment to their growth. I found it to be positive for my son's to have male advisors. I did send my kids to a coeducational school for HS. It's not for everybody but it is also not for nobody. |
What message do boys get from all female teachers? No female interaction? What about mothers, sisters, and the rest of the world? Boys benefit from good male role models. The Heights teachers are strong role models for my sons. We looked at the other all boys school in Potomac and didn't find the male teachers of the same caliber. Much more chauvinist/jock oriented. And they have female teachers so go figure. The Heights strives to help parents raise men that are good citizens, fathers, sons. Check for yourself and listen to some of their podcasts. You don't need to be a Heights parent to benefit from their approach to teaching boys. |
This is true! We met a Mater Dei teacher the other day in his old convertible who was bragging to my son about his date that night and did he think she would be impressed with his car. For some dads this is a good role model for a son but that is not our choice and it is why we went with the Heights. And I'm sure MD has some fine male teachers as well but in comparison we felt like the Heights faculty was more in line with our values. And we a big sports family too. |
I wish our school (STA) emphasized male teachers just a bit more in the US. My DS has 4/6 female teachers plus a female advisor this year. Sometimes people choose a boys school for a reason and wonderful male role models is one reason. |
Can we agree it is a good thing? Can we agree that when you are paying tuition. You are hoping for better than the public school? My bad our public has a nurse lol. There are a lot of conditions where a medical profession on hand can make a difference. |
Are you losing sleep over this? You know you don't have to send your kid to school there, right? |
Boys benefit from good female role models too, eh? Just as girls benefit from good male role models, which is why it would be good for everybody if there were more teachers who are men. Both boys and girls should be taught by male teachers and female teachers. |
Can't agree. My high schoolers never used the nurse in 4 years and before high school, there was no nurse. Unless your kid has a serious medical issue, non-nurse staff can handle things. |
Re: nurse
All faculty and coaches are cpr and first aid trained at the heights. That works for me. |
A boy does not relate to a female as he does a male. Sending my son to The Heights gives him many male role models. At his last school the only male teacher was the PE teacher and the principal. |
And the Heights teachers model for boys that teaching is a career for men. |
This is simply not true, but rather learned behavior. You have taught you son this and reinforce it by sending your child to The Heights. It sounds like a great fit for your family. But you must realize that it would not be a great fit for others, hence the questions on this topic. |
