^^^exactly! The so-called advantage is a crumb. White people making such a big deal of it doesn't help the situation at all. Why not focus on how f-ed up the entire process is and making it fair for everyone?

More like that yes still Berkeley being in CA plays a role. If Berkeley was in another state the Asian stats would drop just like the Mexican stats would drop too

Alright, so if AA is "the merest sliver of advantage" why do we need it at all?

The point is you have tremendous advantage due to whiteness. A black kid getting into Harvard displacing an equally qualified (on paper)
kid who has to go to a different Ivy is not going to make me cry.

I don't really care about SATs or think that your kid's hothoused scores give him some
manifest destiny right to the college of his choice. When you accept that your average white kid is average, you'll be happier.

Well, the data shows that poor White kids do just fine in the Ivy admissions process. Better than higher SES Whites in fact.

Define "poor." The median family income for kids going to Harvard is $168,000, and only 4.5% have a family income in the bottom 20%. 15% of students have a family income over $630,000 per year. There just aren't that many scrappy poor kids going to Harvard, irrespective of race.

You seem a bit dense and your opinion of SATs is irrelevant. Until colleges eliminate standardized test scores from their admissions formula they will remain an important variable. The issue isn't some mythically gifted black kid displacing an average white kid. The issue is a white kid with 1600 being evaluated on par with a black kid scoring 1350.

Ah, yes. Those black kids growing up in 1.5 million dollar houses and going to Sidwell/Maret/etc.- such fighters. Such handicaps. I'm so glad they will finally have their chance.

Do you know why there are black kids growing up in those million dollar homes? Because affirmative action programs gave their parents a shot even though they may not have had perfect scores of their better prepared white peers. Save it.

How is that offensive? I don't think affirmative action works the way many of you believe it does. AA made it so that schools had to be willing to make some effort to increase diversity in their student populations. Throughout most of American history. Given the choice between a white person and a black person of equal intellect and ability, the white person was chosen. AA gave more black people a chance, and many have succeeded as a result. And now they are raising their kids in million dollar homes. It's not offensive, it's progress. White people will always preserve their advantages until forced to give them up, as evidenced by this thread. Affirmative action is absolutely still necessary to level the playing field. Not simply on an individual level, but as far as the entire population is concerned. As black people become more educated, we are able to get better jobs. We are able to provide better opportunities for our children and we are able to take an active role in their education rather than working 3 jobs just to feed them. The idea is that in time the achievement gap will decrease, and these programs won't be necessary. Just because in this one instance in your life you don't have the advantage doesn't mean it's wrong or unnecessary. It should not be the sole burden of the black population to bear the consequences of the system of oppression this country as founded upon.

I understand affirmative action for AAs. After all, this country was founded on the backs of slaves. Why are Hispanics given a preference though especially when the Hispanic category is so vague and broad?
