My kids lifeguard and have befriended the foreign lifeguards at hotels and lodges in national parks. The ones we knew locally were given a rental which was quite a distance from the hotel where they worked and there wasn't much public transportation in that particular suburb. They would walk miles along a busy highway to get home, sometimes buy a bicycle. I worried about their safety -- walking in the dark during an electrical storm, etc. My daughter ended up giving them rides often when their schedules worked out. They had to walk to the grocery store and carry their groceries home, had just a few pots and pans they got from a yard sale.
Be nice to these guys! Offer them your leftover pizza. Maybe ask them if they need a ride if you see them leaving around the same time you are. Talk to them and ask them how they're fixed for household stuff in their apartments. If you have some stuff in your garage, offer it to them. My sons worked in a national park and had cars, and ended up driving a couple of Russian lifeguards around with them, into town, etc. It was a nice experience for them to get to know these guys. |
I come from an affluent family as well and I had to work every summer starting in high school. Once I got to college, I had to work and go to school. One of the best things my mother ever did for me. |
| Years ago there was a lifeguard at one of the pools in my old neighborhood who would always wear a CCCP t shirt. |
| It's too bad American kids can't have these jobs |
You so funny! American kids don't want these jobs - half of them are studying remedial math to get creamed by Indian kids for tech jobs, the others are lazily playing video games. |
| When I was single I paid for one of their rents ? |
Mostly Russians
